February 2019 Newsletter

Principal’s Message

Term 1 Report Cards will be coming home Tuesday, February 19. This report card will reflect student’s achievement and their development of learning skills and work habits, from September to the end of January. Please read over your child’s report and discuss it with your child. Make report cards a positive experience. Do understand that a report card is one measure of your child. Always find something to praise, and focus on how to improve. Please sign and return the bottom of pages 3 and 4 in the envelope provided. Please contact your child’s teacher if you would like an interview.

Please note Family Day is Monday, February 18. There will be no school for students.

Food Allergy Safety Reminder

For the safety of students with life-threatening allergies, we must remember to only send food within our allergy guidelines. No peanuts, tree nuts, kiwi fruit, fish, seafood, raw or undercooked eggs or anything made from these products. Thanks for your help keeping everyone safe and healthy!

Because of asthma and other related respiratory problems, our building is fragrance safe.

Thank you for understanding and your cooperation.

Inclement / Cold Weather Notice

The cold weather has arrived! It is important to make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. If the temperature or the temperature plus the wind-chill dips below – 25 degrees Celsius, we consider reducing the amount of outside time or keep the students inside. Once outside, we do our best to be sure the children are properly dressed and monitor the students for signs of discomfort. If necessary we will enter the school before the recess is over.

Thank you for ensuring your child is prepared for the cold and wet weather. It makes our decisions much easier when the students have hats, mitts, boots and snow pants.

In case of Inclement Weather, keep in mind that while Avon PS closes only in extreme conditions, our buses may not be running when the snowy weather hits. Look for transportation updates through the following media:

Character Education at Avon

This month’s character virtue is Perseverance. Perseverance is being purposeful and steadfast. It is sticking to something, staying committed, no matter how long it takes or what obstacles appear to stop you.

Parents as Partners

I would like to thank our dedicated volunteers who read with several of our primary students once a week. You have made a huge impact on our students’ reading abilities.

You may want to visit the following math websites if you are looking for ideas when spending time with your child. There are also lots of great picture books at the Stratford Public Library that focus on math.

If Your Child is Ill

We appreciate all those families that make special arrangements to keep their child(ren) out of school when they are ill. It helps to keep the illness out of the school and improves the health of both students and staff. If your child is ill and you are not sure if they need to be off school or not, you can contact the school and we can refer to the Guide to Communicable Diseases for Schools about illness and the exclusion requirement.

Check for Head Lice

This is just a reminder for parents and guardians to check your child for pesky head lice. Head lice is not a health problem and there is no exclusion from school. If any are found please contact the school office to let us know and please begin a treatment right away. Shampoos and combs can be purchased at drugstores. If we work together we can keep the critters in check.

Huntington Ave. and Huron St. Crosswalk

To try and reduce the amount of traffic using the Huntington Ave. and Huron St. intersection, and improve safety, I have been asked by City Council to ask our Avon parents and guardians who drive children to school and pick up children from school to avoid using that intersection, and use alternative routes. Rather than using the Huntington Ave. and Huron St. intersection please try to use side streets off of Huntington Ave. i.e., Cawston St., Douglas St., Norman St., and Avon St. Then, cross Huron St. at the intersection of John St., Avondale Ave. or Forman Ave. Changing your driving route to help reduce traffic and make the crosswalk safer for everyone is greatly appreciated.

March Break

The Stratford Perth Museum is excited to present March Break Camp 2019: The Amazing Race!
The camp runs from March 11th to 15th from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. It is recommended for ages 5 to 10.
