April 2019 Newsletter

The school is just buzzing with Lion King excitement! A cast of approximately 50 students from grades 4, 5 and 6 have been rehearsing enthusiastically and are excited to present:

  • Wednesday, April 3 at noon
  • Thursday, April 4 at 7 p.m.

Admission is free but we will be accepting donations at the door to help defray the costs of the production. School Council has generously given $1000 from the fundraising (Family Fun Night) but the cost of the play this year has exceeded this by more than double. Once you see the sets and costumes, I am sure you will agree it is well worth it!

For upcoming events, please see the calendar page on our school website.

Currently at Bedford

This is one of a number of extracurricular activities that are currently taking place at Bedford, mostly over lunch hours-so many opportunities!

  • Chess club
  • Dance club
  • Le club de français (French club)
  • Languages club
  • Art club
  • Rock band
  • Intramural basketball

Thank you to all the parents who made donations through our milk and pizza orders online. This month $177 was donated!

Rainy Days

As spring arrives (rather slowly this year unfortunately) we anticipate more frequent rainy days. We try hard to get outdoors for fresh air and exercise but sometimes we just can’t due to the downpour. On such days students spend their two twenty minute recesses in their classrooms doing quiet activities. If you have old board games you can donate to us for use during these recesses, we would gratefully accept them.

Before school on rainy days, supervision occurs in the halls of the school from 8:50-9:00. We ask that children be dropped off during this time and come straight into the school through their usual doors, which we open at 8:50. Parents are asked to leave their children at the doors of the school and not stay in the halls, as they are very crowded already. Kindergarten ECEs are on duty for their students. Other staff supervise the hallways. Bus students disembark from the buses and come straight in the front doors to the hall supervision. On occasion, children do arrive a few minutes earlier than 8:50 as they estimate their walk time to school. When this happens we allow them to wait in the front hall with administration supervising until the first bell at 8:50.

Our Schools Survey

As required by legislation and regulations, schools must complete a school climate survey of students (Grades 4-12), parents and teachers at least once every two years. Last year, parents, teachers and students in Grades 4 – 12 completed the Our Schools Survey. This year, we will conduct the annual completion of the survey with students.

All students in Grades 4-12 will complete the survey during school hours the week of April 8-12. Student completion of the school climate survey is voluntary. Parents who do not wish their children to participate in the survey should notify the principal in writing of that choice.

I Am Me Survey

AMDSB is re-engaging K-6 parents to complete the Student Identification Survey. We want to enhance our knowledge of the self-identified composition of this student group. Learn more from the IAMme Identity Survey pageHard copies will be coming home with each family. Please return the sealed envelopes to the school or follow the link above and complete the survey online. Survey closes April 4.

Thank you for all those families who call in their child/ren’s absence, it is greatly appreciated. I would like to offer emailing your attendance for those families who may find it easier in the morning rush. Please feel free to continue calling the school at 519-273-1190 or emailing bedoffice@ed.amdsb.ca.

Family Fun Night

Family Fun Night is on Thursday, May 9th from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

This is the best night of the year for the kids! Games, food, fun, crazy jars and silent auction items mean that there is something for everyone. Watch for the request form for the donation of new items and volunteers to be coming home soon! Without your help, this event would not be the amazing night it is!

Family Fun Night funds raised go towards supporting many things at the school. This year’s wish list is: the snack bin/fruit tray program, Kiwanis registration, junior electives, Grade 6 graduation, student volunteer thank you event and technology updates (such as laptops for the smart boards). Your support adds so much to the school and our children!

Grade 3’s and Grade 6’s will be writing EQAO on the following days: May 22, 23, 24, 28, 29, 30. Please try to avoid making any appointments or trips during this time. We do have a few “catch up” days on May 31 and June 3 for those students who must miss due to illness or other unavoidable absences.

Grade 6 Celebration

Each year we celebrate the “graduation” from Bedford. The date has been set this year for Wednesday, June 26 at 1:00 at the school. Dress rehearsal is that morning so please plan accordingly for grade 6 students to be present all day. More details will come your way as the date approaches.

Head Lice

Head lice pose no health risk; they are a common nuisance passed from person to person through head to head contact. If your child has head lice please inform the school and then treat everyone in the house that has head lice. Treating head lice requires the use of lice shampoo from the drug store and picking out all the nits one at a time with your fingernails. It is a tedious process but necessary to clear the head. Head lice is non-exclusive so students are able to come school but we request you do treat them first to avoid sharing. Please continue to check your student’s hair for nits and lice regularly and under good light so we can prevent any outbreak from happening, and catching it early if you do happen to find some.
