Happy New Year and welcome back! We have had a great first few months in our 2018-2019 school year and I know that the staff and students at Brookside are looking forward to continued successes throughout the months ahead. I hope that everyone enjoyed the break from school and spent quality time with family and friends during the holiday season.
Inclement Weather Reminder
When buses are cancelled due to weather, the school usually remains open for students and staff that are able to get to the school safely. On days when the buses are cancelled and the school remains open, please ensure that staff members are in the building when dropping off your children. We will do our best to staff the building during these events, but the weather can certainly cause issues with the timely and safe arrival of staff.
Students are not to be dropped off prior to 8:45 a.m. and need to be picked up by 3:05 p.m.
We also ask that students are signed in at the office on these days. Thanks for your patience as we continue to work through the winter months.
January’s virtue is responsibility. A responsible person is someone that other people can rely on for support. You are willing to be accountable for your actions. When things go wrong and you make a mistake, you make amends instead of excuses. When you are responsible, you keep your agreements.
Calling All Three Year Olds
If you know families with three year old children who will be registering at Brookside for Junior Kindergarten in September 2018, and they missed our November registration, please encourage them to contact the school office.
Grade 8 Graduation
This year’s graduation date is set for Friday, June 21, 2019. More information will be provided closer to the actual date.
Below, you will find a list of some of the more important winter rules. Please take the time to review these rules at home. They are in place specifically for the safety of all of our students.
- Snow is to remain on the ground at all times. It is not to be thrown or eaten.
- The equipment is off limits until further notice due to slip, trip and fall hazards caused by ice and other elements.
- Students are not to play on or around ice. This includes intentionally sliding on the ice and other slippery surfaces.
Scholastic Book Fair
A successful book fair is in the books! Thanks to everyone who came and supported our Scholastic Book Fair. Our Build a Potato Contest was also a success! It was great seeing all the potatoes dressed up as book characters. Staff and students are very talented. Our total sales at the fair were $2907.20! This translates into $1351 worth of books for the school. Way to go Brookside!
Once again, this year’s concert was a huge success. Both our dress rehearsal and the evening concert were well attended and we received many positive comments. Thanks to the students and staff for their efforts. We would also like to thank the community for making the Silent Auction a success. We were able to raise around $1700 for our playground.
F.E. Madill Secondary School Information Night
F.E. Madill will be holding an information night for families of students in Grade 8 on Tuesday, January 15 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. (weather date – January 17). The event includes prizes, activities and self-guided tours.
Cancellations due to weather may occur at any time. Fog, snow and ice are just a few of the reasons to use your favourite media source to stay in-the-know. Below is a list of media sources to follow in order to stay informed.
- AM 920 CKNX
- FM 101.7 The One
- FM 94.5 The Bull
- Country 104.9 FM
During fog delays, listen for updates regarding cancellations. Most fog delays begin with a 2-hour bus delay, but may end up in a full cancellation if the fog does not clear.
