May 2018 Newsletter

Mrs. Hoffman’s Message

Purple crocuses, yellow daffodils and a bright, sun-soaked sky tell us that spring has finally arrived. It’s been a long winter, but here at Clinton Public School students are back outside with soccer and basket balls, games of tag and enjoying our new junior/intermediate swings.

Spring is a great time to encourage students to walk to school. Or dust off the bikes and scooters and enjoy the fresh air on the way to school. Let’s fill CPS bike racks every day till June! Walking, using a scooter or riding a bike helps our environment, provides healthy exercise, allows for self regulation and independence for students and, as a bonus, eases our parking congestion in the mornings and afternoons.

Character Attribute Of The Month – Fairness

In May we will be focusing on the character attribute Fairness. “Treating everyone in a just and accepting manner”. Being fair is being sensitive to the needs of each individual, which means “fairness is not sameness”. We treat each other as we wish to be treated ourselves. We interact with others without stereotyping, prejudice or discrimination. We stand up for human rights.

Our SCHOOL Climate Survey

Parents and guardians please take the time to fill in the Parent survey on the AMDSB website. The survey closes on May 10th. The OurSCHOOL Parent Survey gives you the chance to provide your feedback anonymously into school initiatives. It’s voluntary, but we encourage you to participate, so we get a better understanding how you feel the school supports learning, positive behaviour and promotes a safe and inclusive environment.

EQAO Assessment Dates

The grade three and six assessment dates for EQAO will be held on May 23, 24, 25, 29, 30 and 31, 2018. It is very important that your child be at school on these days. Please avoid booking appointments for your child during this time period.

Child & Youth Mental Health Week

May 7 – 13 is Child & Youth Mental Health Awareness Week. During the week, our school team will be raising awareness about mental health concerns which impact young people and adults alike.

Throughout the week we will share many strategies to help improve and maintain mental wellness.

Please follow our Twitter and Facebook posts to learn alongside your children. We will wear green on Wednesday, May 9 as a symbol of solidarity and awareness of mental health concerns.

Facebook, Twitter, and School Website

Announcements, reminders, good news stories, community events and more are being posted to Twitter, which conveniently forwards our messages to our school website and now, our school Facebook page. The purpose of these platforms is to keep our school community better informed on more than one platform, and most of this communication will be one-way, from the office or classroom to you. As always, if you have questions for staff, please contact us via email or phone.
Please ‘like’ us on our Facebook webpage or follow us on Twitter @clintonps.

Spring Coffee House

Music is meant to be shared, and the annual Coffee House Concert was an opportunity to do just that. Thanks to everyone who supported our CPS musicians by attending one of the concerts, and special thanks for getting students to school to participate in the evening performance.

Cougar Sports

Congratulations to our Senior Basketball Teams who had a great day at the CHSS Tournament on April 17. Our teams displayed excellent skills, teamwork, grit and determination in their play, and were very sportsmanlike in some tough games. The girl’s team finished second overall! Mr. Lobb and Mr. Lingard would like to thank our athletes for their hard work, and would like to thank all of the families and community members who came out to support our team.

In April, the Heart and Stoke Foundation presented a kick off assembly for our annual fundraising event at Clinton Public School. Our staff and students learned some information about heart health and the importance of physical activity. Each class will participate in our Jump Rope activities during gym classes throughout the week of May 1. Pledge forms for this event have been sent home with each family and all proceeds will go to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Pledge forms must be returned by May 4.

On May 10, Mrs. Breckon’s Grade 6 students will participate in a workshop: Creative Stitching. Using basic sewing skills, students will have the opportunity to redesign an old t-shirt.
