The excitement is building in the air! The students are anxious for the big day to arrive … staff too! The first few months of school have gone well and flown by very quickly and we have a number of upcoming events in the days ahead. At this time I would like to express my appreciation and thank our families, volunteers, and our school community for all the continued support and encouragement of students and staff at Elma. I wish each and every one a joyous holiday season. May the New Year continue to bring joy and happiness to us all!
Elma’s Holiday Concert will take place on Thursday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m. (dress rehearsal on Wednesday, December 6th at 12:30). Students in Grade 1 through to Grade 3/4 will be performing “Christmas at the Hop” with vocal support from our Primary Choir and Elma Singers. This musical event promises to bring Christmas cheer to all while highlighting some of the talent at Elma.
Elma Toy Drive
Elma will be having its annual Toy Drive for the Listowel Salvation Army. Please bring a new, unwrapped toy to place under the Christmas tree in the lobby by end of day, Friday, December 8th. Help make Christmas merry and bright for children in need in our community.
Lost and Found
We have a number of items in our lost and found. Please remind your child to check the bin to see if any of the items belong to them. Any unclaimed items will be sent to a local charity after Friday, December 22nd.
Please note our last day of classes before the Christmas Break is Friday, December 22nd and classes resume on Monday, January 8th. The staff at Elma would like to wish all of our families a relaxing and enjoyable break.
Grade 8 Parent Night – LDSS
There will be an open house for our Grade 8 students and parents to visit LDSS on Tuesday, December 12th. Please see the LDSS website or school sign for details. LDSS will be hosting their annual Grade 8 visit day on Tuesday, December 5th.
As winter is quickly approaching we want to share with you our process for cancelling buses in inclement weather. The safety of our students and staff is our main priority.
While we know there will be circumstances when buses are cancelled, we want to ensure you that we will do our very best to keep schools open. When buses are cancelled there is still meaningful work and learning occurring in our classrooms. To see if a school bus is cancelled or delayed or whether your school is closed, please visit https://ourschoolbuses.ca/
When schools are open to students during inclement weather and buses are cancelled, student drop-off and pick-up times remain the regular entry and dismissal times.
Cell Phones and Electronic Devices
At Elma, we continue to use an integrated approach with respect to technology and focus on responsible use. We would like to draw attention to recent changes we have made in our student and parent handbooks.
With the availability of school owned devices provided for student use, students are encouraged to leave all personal devices at home (games, tablets, cell phones, etc.) unless permission is given by the classroom teacher to use the device for a specific learning purpose.
Students up to and including Grade 6 will not use electronic devices during nutrition breaks. Grade 7 and 8 students may use personal owned devices during nutrition breaks in an appropriate manner. Students will not be permitted to use electronic devices during outdoor recess but they may have access to board owned devices with teacher permission during indoor recesses. Students are responsible for the care and safekeeping of their own devices.
Much like home, December is a very busy month with numerous scheduled activities. Please watch for information that your child may be bringing home. A reminder of the PA Day scheduled for Friday, December 1st (no classes for students).
