December 2018 Newsletter
The excitement is building in the air! The students are anxious for the big day to arrive … staff too! The first few months of school have gone well and flown by very quickly and we have a number of upcoming events in the days ahead. At this time I would like to express my appreciation and thank our families, volunteers, and our school community for all the continued support and encouragement of students and staff at Elma. I wish each and every one a joyous holiday season. May the New Year continue to bring joy and happiness to us all!
Elma’s Holiday Concert performances will take place on Wednesday, December 12th at 9:45 a.m. and Thursday, December 13th at 12:30. Students in Grade 1 through to Grade 4 will be performing “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” with vocal support from our Primary Choir and Elma Singers. This musical event promises to bring Christmas cheer to all while highlighting some of the talent at Elma.
Elma Toy Drive
Elma will be having its annual Toy Drive for the Listowel Salvation Army. Please bring a new, unwrapped toy to place under the Christmas tree in the lobby by end of day, Tuesday, December 11th. Help make Christmas merry and bright for children in need in our community.
Lost and Found
We have a number of items in our lost and found. Please remind your child to check the bin to see if any of the items belong to them. Any unclaimed items will be sent to a local charity during the Christmas break.
Please note our last day of classes before the Christmas Break is Friday, December 21st and classes resume on Monday, January 7th. The staff at Elma would like to wish all of our families a relaxing and enjoyable break.
Grade 8 Parent Night – LDSS
There will be an open house for our Grade 8 students and parents to visit LDSS on Thursday, December 13th. Please see the LDSS website or school sign for details. LDSS will be hosting their annual Grade 8 visit day on Wednesday, December 12th.
With winter quickly approaching, it is important to share information regarding the cancellation of buses in inclement weather. The safety of our students and staff is our main priority. While there will be circumstances when buses are cancelled, we will do our very best to keep schools open. Please remember when schools are open to students during inclement weather and buses are cancelled, student drop-off and pick-up times by parents remain the regular entry and dismissal times.
To check if a school bus is cancelled/delayed or whether Elma is closed, please visit the Cancellations and Delays Website.
Pathways Career and Information Fair
Students are invited to explore plans for their future by attending the Pathways Career and Information Fair on Wednesday, December 5th, at the Stratford Rotary Complex. Students and families of all ages, are invited to come out to see representatives from post-secondary institutions, skilled trades and secondary program displays. Interactive booths will be available to explore. Everyone is welcome!

Newry Coach Lines is now accepting applications for school bus drivers. In-house training is provided with a Ministry certified trainer. You are invited to come join Ontario’s Elite Fleet. For further details, please contact John Chapman (519) 356-2611.
Much like home, December is a very busy month with numerous scheduled activities. Please watch for information that your child may be bringing home.
A reminder of the PA Day scheduled for Friday, December 7th (no classes for students).
Good-Bye Mrs. Bender
To Elma staff, students, and their families, Mrs. Bender has been a valuable source of support and inspiration. She models compassion and respect working with students to develop their talents and realize their potential. We say good-bye to Mrs. Bender as she wraps up her last week at Elma and wish her all the best in all her future endeavours.
