June 2018 Newsletter

Principal’s Message

Hello Exeter Elementary School Families! I am thrilled to be spending the month of June with you. June will certainly be busy, with many wonderful activities and celebrations; Track and Field, School Trips, our Spaghetti Dinner and Canada Play Day. Along with the fun, our learning continues. I am very impressed with the positive attitude and excellent behaviour of our students. They will have many exciting opportunities in June to continue this caring and responsible conduct away from our school building.

Report cards will be sent home Tuesday, June 26, 2018.

There is a PA Day on Friday, June 8, 2018. There is no school for students that day.
The last day of school for students is Thursday, June 28, 2018.  Friday, June 29, 2018 is a PA Day for Staff.  Staffing for the 2018-2019 school year is in progress. I will be working with the incredible E.E.S. Staff this month to be sure things are all set to welcome students back in September.

The first day back to school is Tuesday, September 4, 2018. Class lists will be posted on the Primary and Junior doors that morning. When the entry bell rings, students will line up outside with their class and proceed, with their teacher, to their homerooms. If it happens to rain that morning, students are asked to go to the gym, and teachers will help them find their new class.

Be sure to watch the exciting transformation of our playground over the summer. It will be an amazing addition to our school yard. Thank you to School Council for their dedication and incredible support of this project!

If you are planning to move out of the Exeter Elementary School area for the 2018-2019 school year, please contact the office at (519)-235-2630. If you know a family moving over the summer who plans to attend Exeter Elementary, please ask them to call the school office to register. This really helps us with organizing classes and schedules for September.

Thank you for the warm welcome. It has been a privilege getting to know your child(ren). A sincere thank you from our Students and Staff to parents, dedicated volunteers and community supporters for making Exeter Elementary School such a lovely and positive place! I wish you a safe, happy, healthy, relaxing summer!

Me to We Thank You!

On behalf of our entire Me to We student group, we would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your support for an amazing school year. Our Me to We students were awesome, dedicated, and wonderful leaders in our school, promoting empathy, hard work and commitment. With your help, we raised $1000 for a WE Charity, which will go towards people in another country who desperately need help with education, water, buildings and/or food. In addition, we have raised over $1400 for Jessica’s House, which will go towards new books and other exciting contributions. We look forward to having Me to We begin again in September, where we will pick more students to be a part of this amazing group and be a part of WE Day in Toronto. Thanks again Exeter Elementary! You rock Jr. Panthers! Way to go!

Me to We LAST Spirit Day – Terrific Tie Day

On Friday June 15, wear, decorate or borrow your favourite tie that represents that special man in your life. Who are you going to honour? Your Dad? Your Grandfather? Your Uncle? We look forward to seeing all of the creative and terrific ties!

“Jump Rope for Heart”

Well, our annual E.E.S. Jump Rope for Heart campaign has been another great success! Our goal this year was $3700…and we came very close! Our grand total was $3417.30!! While we came up a wee bit short, the real winners are the Heart and Stroke Foundation and all of the people whose lives are positively affected by their research. A tremendous thank you to all of the students and staff of Exeter Elementary for their continued support of this campaign, and of course to Exeter and the surrounding community for all of the support that you have given us this year and in the past. Tremendous work Jr. Panthers! You have made a huge difference in the lives of so many people, and you have done it again!

Sun Safety

At Exeter Elementary we want to keep your child sun safe! Did you know that sunburns experienced in childhood have been linked to the development of skin cancer later in life? Overexposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays may lead to skin cancer, cataracts, and other related illnesses. These can be prevented by practising the following behaviours consistently when the UV index is 3 or higher:

• wearing sunscreen of a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher
• limiting sun exposure during peak hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• covering up with long-sleeved shirts, hats, lip-balm and sunglasses, and
• seeking shade whenever possible

First and second nutrition breaks will run as usual. The schedule sent home on Monday does match our normal breaks in the school day. Our day will begin at 8:35 a.m. and first break will be 10:35-11:15 and second break 12:55-1:35. In the event of rain we will follow the same schedule Tuesday. Treats will be available at the booth and prices range from $.25-$1.00 if you choose to send money.

School Bus Safety Program

School Bus Operator Safety and Training teams will conduct School Bus Safety Programs for new September 2018 Junior Kindergarten at Exeter Elementary Schools on June 7, 2018, at 10:00 a.m.

The program consists of a newly created, Ministry approved standardized Safety video, and a participatory class presentation by the School Bus Operator Safety Team discussing items such as School Bus rules, the Green Tag program, and safe backpack size. There will also be an opportunity for the student and parent(s)to take a “First Ride” on a School Bus, as well as actual practice for safely crossing the road to safely board and de-board a School Bus.

Please take time to look in the lost and found box by the front door for any items that may belong to your student.
