April 2019 Newsletter

Principal’s Message

April 5 is a PD Day and staff at our school will be learning about ways to support positive mental health in our building in addition to working on a variety of mental health initiatives. It things go according to plan, the first piece of our sensory path will go down. We are quite curious to see how students will respond to be being told not to walk in the hallway, but instead to hop and leap through it.

There are a growing number of schools experimenting with this. See the online article titled, “Feeling fidgety in class? Go stomp, jump or hop down this school’s sensory hallway”.

Our first section of sensory hallway will be created with decals that can be placed on top of the waxed floor. Our next section requires the floor to be stripped and the decals placed under the wax so this piece won’t be in place until September. We are very grateful that our occupational (Bev Anstett) and physical therapist (Lesley Papple) have worked with us to create a plan that allows us to create something that is cost effective, but also maximizes the benefits to our students.

EQAO testing begins in May. Teachers of both the Grade 3 and 6 classes have been preparing for EQAO testing by working on practice reading, writing and math tests. You can also help by ensuring that you don’t make doctor, dental appointments etc. during May 21 – June 3 and also making sure that your students are well rested. Grade 3 will begin writing EQAO right after Oh Canada and Grade 6 will write in the middle block.

Finally, typically as the weather gets warmer a school’s lost and found pile grows again. When mornings are still cool, students often come to school with a jacket or sweater and leave for home without it. Families are encouraged to label spring wear so that items of clothing are more easily reunited with their owners.
