Message from the Principal

Season’s Greetings to all of our school families.  We hope you are able to enjoy some quality family time over the next several weeks, and have a relaxing Christmas break.   The last day of classes for students will be Friday, December 22nd, with students returning to class on Monday, January 8, 2018.

There will two opportunities to view our concert this year. The children are performing Snow Biz. Parents are welcome to attend our school performance on Tuesday, December 19th beginning at 12:15 p.m. and our evening performance on Tuesday, December 19th starting at 6:30 p.m.  With the night performance being so popular if you are able to attend the day performance it would definitely help with a less crowded gym in the evening.  We would appreciate anyone who can assist us in attending the daytime performance.

Unfortunately, inclement weather will soon be upon us.  Please see the detailed information page sent out on behalf of the Avon Maitland School Board with details and beliefs of the system in regards to weather days.  The most up to date information will be on the https://ourschoolbuses.ca/ and even though it looks like this is just bus information it is actually showing school opening and closures as well.  Please use this site to gather most accurate and up to date information when it comes to inclement weather.

Border Crossing and Renewals

The deadline for border crossing requests is February 1st, 2018 to help provide a more accurate picture of student enrolment for September 2018. As a result, we will be sending home border crossing renewal forms during the week of January 8th. Kindly complete the form and return it to the office by Monday, January 29th, 2018. Remember that border crossing is reviewed each year and is based on availability of spaces in the receiving school. Border crossing is never guaranteed.

All new border crossing requests must be initiated at the home school including requests for siblings of currently approved border crossers. The deadline for these requests is February 1, 2018. Siblings of current border crossers will not be automatically approved.

Grade 6 students, in our catchment area, will be leaving Hamlet and will register at Stratford Central. A grade 6 student in our area who wishes to attend Northwestern Public School must register at Stratford Central but complete a border crossing request form here at Hamlet. If you have a child in grade 6 who currently border crosses into Hamlet please contact us to discuss their home school for September 2018.
The border crossing request must be done by February 1st. We must attach the border crossing request form to your child’s registration.  Any forms received after February 1st may not be considered prior to June 30th.  Decisions will be communicated by the home school to the parent/guardian by April 2018.

The Open House for Grade 6 students who are planning to attend Stratford Central or Northwestern are traditionally held in mid-January.  There will be further information sent out when we receive further details.

Students are asked to have separate indoor and outdoor footwear.   With the arrival of winter weather, outdoor footwear should be winter boots.   Your help with having suitable footwear keeps your child more comfortable indoors and outdoors, and helps to keep the floors in the classrooms and gym cleaner, drier and safer.

If Your Child is Ill

We appreciate all those families that make special arrangements to keep their child(ren) out of school when they are ill.  It helps to keep the illness out of the school and improves the health of both students and staff.  Below are the recommendations from the Health Unit for some common illnesses among school-ages children and whether or not they should attend school.

  • Colds, Ear Infections, Fifth Disease, Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease
    Your child can go to school unless they are not feeling well enough to take part in all school activities.
  • Vomiting and Diarrhea
    There are many causes for vomiting and diarrhea.  Some can be easily passed on to others, so your child should remain off school for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Rash with a Fever
    Keep them home from school until the fever and rash are gone, unless a doctor has stated that the illness is not contagious.
  • Chickenpox
    Your child will need to stay off school until all lesions (spots) are crusted over, which is usually about five days.  Chickenpox vaccine is recommended as part of the routine immunization schedule.
  • Strep Throat and Impetigo
    Keep your child home until they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours.

These are only a few illnesses that your child may get.  If your child is ill and you are not sure if they need to be off school or not, you can contact the school and ask them to refer to the Guide to Communicable Diseases for Schools about illness and the exclusion requirement.

Hello from School Council!

Thanks to all who supported the Fresh from the Farm and Poinsettia fundraisers. We know there were some issues with the online ordering for the Poinsettias so please get in touch with Noelle in the office if you have not received your order. We appreciate your patience as we rectify the matter. Also, a big thank you to all the parent volunteers who came out to help sort and distribute all the orders, we couldn’t have done it without you!

We had a great turnout for our Mindful Parenting with Mike Masse on November 28th. Parents learned what mindfulness means and how meditation and breathing techniques are used as tools to help our children (and us adults!) cope with emotional stress. Didn’t make the workshop? We’ll be hosting another one in the spring.

Spiritwear orders will be delivered the week of December 18th, 2017. We will be in touch when they arrive to organize pick-up.

The holiday concert is on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 so School Council is Calling all bakers! If you can contribute baking or can volunteer at our holiday bake sale, prior to each performance, we’d love to hear from you! Please contact Ramona at rgorniklee@gmail.com.

Front Driveway- Vip Message

No one is allowed to park at the front of the school during the hours of 8:30 am to 9:00 am and 3:20 pm to 4:00 pm. This is imperative as we need room for the bus to drive through during these designate times. There is a sign that states this as well. We will be requiring you to move and we will enforce this with everyone as the bus lane must be kept clear at these times. Please assist us by mentioning to anyone who may be responsible for picking up or dropping off your children. We thank you for co-operation in advance!

We request that no toys and games from home come to school as it increases the chance of it getting lost and/or ruined. No trading cards, bay blades or any toys that promote violence or inappropriate play will be allowed. If students bring these to school they will be held in the office for the day and student may pick up to take home at the end of the day. Thank you in advance for your support.

Please be aware of the following guidelines for Hamlet…

• Due to life threatening allergies, we ask that our families send lunches that are nut free. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
• In the nice weather, I know many of you walk with your child and the family pet. Unfortunately, we cannot allow dogs on our playground. With all of the noise and confusion on the school yard, we cannot take the chance of having a dog on the yard. This ensures the safety of the children and also protects your dog from an unfortunate incident. Thank you for leaving pets off the school grounds.
• Yard supervision begins at 8:55 am and ends at 3:35 pm. Children should not be dropped off before or picked up after these times.
• Our snack bin program accepts donations! If you would like to donate healthy, non-perishable food items, that would be great! Just please remember they must be nut free. You can also donate by sending a cheque to the school, made payable to The Foundation for Education. Please make a note on the cheque the purpose is for the Snack Program at Hamlet Public School and a tax receipt will be issued to you.

Holiday Concert

The music room is a buzz with the sounds of holidays songs in preparation for Hamlet Public School’s annual Holiday Concert. This year, the title of our concert is “Snow Biz”. This concert will feature primary students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 classes. Students have to share their talents with you. Our Holiday Concert will be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2017. We have two performances – 12:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Please make an attempt to limit the number of people in your family coming to the evening performance. This will help overcrowding issues we have experienced in the past. If at all possible, please come to the afternoon performance instead of the evening performance.

Survey – Before and After School

Families interested in Before or After School Childcare programs, should complete the on-line survey no later than Friday December 15th. The survey is available on the AMDSB website.  Should you require a paper copy, please contact the school.  We appreciate your assistance, as we determine the feasibility of offering such programs.

A Gift To Honour

With a ‘Gift to Honour’ you can choose to make a donation in someone’s honour and 100% of that donation will be designated for a project within your own school.

Here is the process:

1. Fill out the Gift to Honour & Tax Receipt Information.
This can be found at your school or online at http://foundationforeducation.ca/donate/.

2. Attach a cheque for your chosen amount. The cheque must be made payable to the Foundation For Education who will issue a charitable tax receipt for the full
amount.

3. Return this Form and cheque to your school to be forwarded to the Foundation.

4. Pick up a Gift to Honour card at the school and fill out for the child to hand to the person receiving the card.
