Message from the Principal
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday with their families.
January is an important month for your child. It is a time to settle back into the term and start fresh. At this time of year, it is important to remind students that the term 1 report cards will be coming home on Tuesday, February 20th. Teachers will be conducting final assessments as they begin the evaluation process for the reports.
In the area of school improvement, our primary and junior divisions will continue to develop the student’s math skills and development through the use of a variety of assessment tools to determine each student’s area of need in math. We continue to work with our school’s math coach Kalen Carroll who brings a wealth of knowledge and grass roots experience from the classroom. We are developing our knowledge of the importance of a variety of strategies to meet the multitude of learner profiles that we work with every day. We look forward to seeing student’s progress in their math skills as we deepen our work in the area of math.
Now that winter has hit us, we need to keep a close eye on the weather. If the temperature or the temperature plus the wind-chill dips below –25 degrees Celsius, we will keep the students inside. On other days, when it is close to that mark we will either keep students indoors or shorten the outdoor recess. Once outside, we do our best to be sure the children are properly dressed and monitor the students for signs of discomfort. If necessary, we will enter the school before the recess is over.
Thank you for ensuring that your children are prepared for the cold weather. It makes our decisions much easier when the students have boots, hats, mitts, and snow pants. It is always a great idea to have names and labels on all of the students’ belongings.
We understand that there must be a balance between the students need for physical activity and protecting them from the cold. However, we will ere on the side of caution.
This is a reminder that French Immersion is offered for students entering Grade 1 in AMDSB. Registration forms for Grade 1 French Immersion are now available in Stratford and area elementary schools during school hours. Registration forms are due to the Bedford or Anne Hathaway office by January 31st, 2018. Information brochures and registration forms can be obtained from your home school office.
The Open House for Grade 6 students that are in the catchment area for Stratford Central Public School will be held on Monday, January 15th from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
The Open House for Grade 6 students that are in the area for Northwestern will be held on the evening of Tuesday, January 23, 2018 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. The snow date for Northwestern is January 24th.
VIP- you will receive a link to a very brief survey that is CRITICAL you respond to. As previously shared with you last year, we have an opportunity to change Hamlet PS start and end times; however, we will only move forward with this change in time, if the majority of the school population wishes to change it. The change would occur in September of 2018-2019 school year. It hinges on busing which is shared by multiple schools, so we don’t have a choice on the time options to change to. The change would be from a 9:05 start, which we have now, to an 8:30 a.m. start. The end of the day would change from 3:25, which we have now, to 2:50 p.m. end of day. PLEASE respond when you get your link to the survey so we can honour the school community wishes. The survey will close on January 26/18.
Our next Professional Activity Day is Friday, February 2nd. Staff will be working on assessment, evaluation and reporting.
The deadline for border crossing requests and renewals is February 1st, 2018 to help provide a more accurate picture of student enrolment for September 2018. As a result, we will be sending home border crossing renewal forms during the week of January 8th. Kindly complete the form and return it to the office by Tuesday, January 30th, 2018. Remember that border crossing is reviewed each year and is based on availability of spaces in the receiving school. Border crossing is never guaranteed.
All new border crossing requests must be initiated at the home school including requests for siblings of currently approved border crossers. The deadline for these requests is February 1, 2018. Siblings of current border crossers will not be automatically approved.
Grade 6 students, in our catchment area, will be leaving Hamlet and will register at Stratford Central. A grade 6 student in our area who wishes to attend Northwestern Public School must register at Stratford Central but complete a border crossing request form here at Hamlet. If you have a child in grade 6 who currently border crosses into Hamlet please contact us to discuss their home school for September 2018.
The border crossing request must be done by February 1st. We must attach the border crossing request form to your child’s registration.
Any forms received after February 1st may not be considered prior to June 30th.
Front Driveway- VIP Message
No one is allowed to park at the front of the school during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 3:20 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is imperative as we need room for the bus to drive through during these designate times. There is a sign that states this as well. We will be requiring you to move and we will enforce this with everyone as the bus lane must be kept clear at these times. Please assist us by mentioning to anyone who may be responsible for picking up or dropping off your children. We thank you for co-operation in advance!
We request that no toys and games from home come to school as it increases the chance of it getting lost and/or ruined. No trading cards, bay blades or any toys that promote violence or inappropriate play will be allowed. If students bring these to school they will be held in the office for the day and student may pick up to take home at the end of the day. Thank you in advance for your support.
Please be aware of the following guidelines for Hamlet…
• Due to life threatening allergies, we ask that our families send lunches that are nut free. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
• In the nice weather, I know many of you walk with your child and the family pet. Unfortunately, we cannot allow dogs on our playground. With all of the noise and confusion on the school yard, we cannot take the chance of having a dog on the yard. This ensures the safety of the children and also protects your dog from an unfortunate incident. Thank you for leaving pets off the school grounds.
• Yard supervision begins at 8:55 a.m. and ends at 3:35 p.m. Children should not be dropped off before or picked up after these times.
• Our snack bin program accepts donations! If you would like to donate healthy, non-perishable food items, that would be great! Just please remember they must be nut free. You can also donate by sending a cheque to the school, made payable to The Foundation for Education. Please make a note on the cheque the purpose is for the Snack Program at Hamlet Public School and a tax receipt will be issued to you.
Message from School Council
January School Council Newsletter 2018
On behalf of School Council, we wish a very Happy New Year to our Hamlet families and friends. We hope you had a restful holiday break. We are very excited to start the next half of the school year with you.
Thank you to everyone who attended our holiday concert. We were overwhelmed with the wonderful support from our Hamlet community and of course a big shout out to Ms. Ross for her amazing creative vision and all of the teachers, volunteers, custodial and support staff that made it all happen.
In January School Council will be focused on the remainder of our fundraising activities, forming a School Playground Committee and of course preparing for our annual Fun Fair at the end of the year. Be on the lookout for our next fundraiser at the end of the month; the ever-popular Elmira Chicken. Do you have expertise and/or interest in planning our back playground? We will be forming a sub-committee this month and we’d love to hear from you.
We’ve unfortunately lost our sponsor for the Fun Fair this year. If you know a business or community member that would like to support a local school by sponsoring our bouncy castle please let us know.
Please join us Monday January 15 @ 6:30 p.m. in the library. Childcare will be provided upon notice.
