Message from the Principal

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday with their families.

January is an important month for your child. It is a time to settle back into the term and start fresh. At this time of year, it is important to remind students that the term 1 report cards will be coming home on Tuesday, February 19th. Teachers will be conducting final assessments as they begin the evaluation process for the reports.

A huge thank you to Mrs. Ross and all of the staff/volunteers for their additional efforts and support in making the production of Charlotte’s Web so fantastic! I had many positive reviews and words of appreciation. The students worked very hard as did the dance team, I was thoroughly impressed. Well done!

Thank you for all of the donations at the door and throughout the month of December for Madelynn Gordon. We were able to provide a cheque to the Gordon family for over $1200. Madi is a kindergarten student at Hamlet that has been diagnosed with anterio virus D68. After being in Sick Kids hospital for 7 weeks; in December, she was transferred to the care at Bloorview Children’s rehabilitation centre in Toronto where they continue to monitor her paralysis. Thank you to all the staff, students and families for your ongoing support throughout this journey!

Now that winter has hit us, we need to keep a close eye on the weather. When temperatures are below -20C, we will seek further information on the wind chill. Environment Canada states the risk of frostbite is low providing students are properly dressed for the weather. When the windchill exceeds -28, the risk of frostbite is higher when students are exposed for 30 minutes or more.

On certain other days, when it is below -25, we may either keep students indoors or shorten the outdoor recess. Once outside, we do our best to be sure the children are properly dressed and monitor the students for signs of discomfort. If necessary, we will enter the school before the recess is over.

Thank you for ensuring that your children are prepared for the cold weather. It makes our decisions much easier when the students have boots, hats, mitts, and snow pants. It is always a great idea to have names and labels on all of the students’ belongings.

We understand that there must be a balance between the students need for physical activity and protecting them from the cold. However, we will error on the side of caution.

A friendly reminder; supervision does not begin until 8:55 a.m. and ends at 3:35 p.m. If your children are on the yard before or after this time, there is no guaranteed supervisor(s).

The Open House for Grade 6 students will be held on the evening of Tuesday, February 5th, 2019 from 6:15 to 8:00 p.m. at Northwestern Secondary School. Current Grade 6 students will be asked to meet in the gym for 6:15 p.m. More information to follow.

Our next Professional Activity Day is Friday, February 1st. Staff will be working on assessment, evaluation and reporting.

Message from the Gordon Family

We would like to give a heartfelt thank you for all of the generosity and support from the Hamlet P.S. staff, students and families. We were presented with a cheque for more than $1200. We as a family are grateful beyond words. These funds will definitely help with our numerous weekly commutes to Toronto to be with Madi in the hospital, as well as our accommodations during this Christmas season.

We as a family have been overwhelmed by the amazing amount of love and support we have received from within our very own community! Words cannot express our true gratitude from the bottom of our hearts – we thank you all!

Border Crossing

The deadline for border crossing requests and renewals is February 1st, 2019 to help provide a more accurate picture of student enrolment for September 2019. As a result, we will be sending home border crossing renewal forms within the next few days. Kindly complete the form and return it to the office by Tuesday, January 29th, 2019. Remember that border crossing is reviewed each year and is based on availability of spaces in the receiving school. Border crossing is never guaranteed.

All new border crossing requests must be initiated at the home school including requests for siblings of currently approved border crossers. Siblings of current border crossers will not be automatically approved.

Front Driveway – VIP Message

NO ONE is allowed to park at the front of the school during the hours of 8:30 am to 9:00 am and 3:20 pm to 4:00 pm. THIS IS IMPERATIVE as we need room for the bus to drive through during these designate times. There is a sign that states this as well. We will be requiring you to move and we will enforce this with everyone as the bus lane must be kept clear at these times. Please assist us by mentioning to anyone who may be responsible for picking up or dropping off your children. We thank you for cooperation in advance!

March Break Camp

The Stratford Perth Museum is excited to present March Break Camp 2019: The Amazing Race!

The camp runs from March 11th to 15th from 9am to 4:30 pm each day. It is recommended for ages 5 to 10.

Please be aware of the following guidelines for Hamlet…

  • Due to life threatening allergies, we ask that our families send lunches that are nut free. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
  • In the nice weather, I know many of you walk with your child and the family pet. Unfortunately, we cannot allow dogs on our playground. With all of the noise and confusion on the school yard, we cannot take the chance of having a dog on the yard. This ensures the safety of the children and also protects your dog from an unfortunate incident. Thank you for leaving pets off the school grounds.
  • Yard supervision begins at 8:55 am and ends at 3:35 pm. Children should not be dropped off before or picked up after these times.
  • Our snack bin program accepts donations! If you would like to donate healthy, non-perishable food items, that would be great! Just please remember they must be nut free. You can also donate by sending a cheque to the school, made payable to The Foundation for Education. Please make a note on the cheque the purpose is for the Snack Program at Hamlet Public School and a tax receipt will be issued to you.

Message from School Council

On behalf of School Council, we wish a very Happy New Year to our Hamlet families and friends. We hope you had a restful holiday break. We are very excited to start the next half of the school year with you.

Thank you to everyone who purchased photos and supported our bake sale at the holiday concert. As always, we were thrilled with the amazing support from our Hamlet community and of course a big shout out to Ms. Ross for her creative vision and to all of the teachers, volunteers, custodial and support staff who made it all happen.

In January School Council will be focused on the remainder of our fundraising activities. Be on the lookout for our next fundraiser this month; the ever-popular Elmira Chicken.
