Howick Central Public School belongs to the Avon Maitland District School Board. It is an elementary school that provides educational programming for students from junior kindergarten to grade 8, for the students of Howick Township, including the villages of Fordwich, Wroxeter, Gorrie, and the outskirts of Belmore and Clifford. Located in a beautiful country setting on 42 acres, our outdoor facilities include gardens, playground equipment, a track, soccer fields, basketball courts, ball diamonds, a toboggan hill, and large tarmac areas for games. We are also located right next to the Howick Arena and library, and our students use these facilities regularly. Our current enrollment for 2014 – 2015 is 347, which includes three full day learning classes each day for JK and SK students.
At Howick Central, we adhere to our Board’s mission statement, to “Engage, Inspire and Innovate…Always Learning.” We strive to create a love of learning that students will retain long after they leave our building.
At Howick Central we envision a school where:

We recognize that students need to be provided with skills to learn in the 21st century. Technology has changed how our students will learn and view the world. At Howick Central, we recognize the important role that technology plays in educating today’s youth. We have SmartBoards in every classroom, a portable netbook lab, a portable iPad lab and our school has wireless Internet access, so students can bring in their own electronic devices for learning purposes. The staff at this school is constantly upgrading their skills in using technology to help students learn.
Children need to be healthy in order to learn. We also know that bullying is greatly reduced when students are provided with activities to do at recess. Thanks to fundraising from our community, we have excellent outdoor facilities and equipment to keep our students active during recess. We also have an extensive intramural program and many team sports and clubs provided for students by staff members. Our students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills by becoming involved as peacekeepers, snack helpers, Student Council members, Intramural Committee leaders, Me to We Group, and Green Team. Nutrition is also important, and we have a universal healthy snack program for our students. We encourage parents to send healthy lunches as well.
Howick Central is also fortunate to have a hard-working School Council and volunteer group who contribute to our school through their ongoing support for students, advice, and fundraising activities. Any parents or community members who would like to be involved as a volunteer can fill in the form that is sent home in September, or contact the school.
Our students have the benefit of an excellent staff who continually strive to keep our students engaged, and inspired. Students are encouraged to become involved in all aspects of school life. They are encouraged to assume responsibility for their decisions, actions and learning. At Howick Central, we believe in helping each student to develop to their full potential, academically, socially, and emotionally. We believe that this can only happen when parents, students, staff and the community all work together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. We value input from parents and the community to help us provide the best education for our students.
