April 2018 Newsletter

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This month we have a couple of opportunities for you to join us to celebrate learning.  For those of you with students in K-3 you won’t want to miss our author visit on April 26th.  Thanks to a PRO (parent reaching out) grant, our snack program, Mrs. Stein, Mrs. Hill and school council we are able to offer an exciting author visit and light supper for only $1 per person!  Food will be served from  5 – 6 p.m. and following that Mr. Werner Zimmerman will take the stage.  Please register on schoolcashonline to help us with numbers.  In addition, Ms. Sygrove is hosting a book fair in the library that evening.

On April 12th from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. join grades 4 – 8 as we open classrooms for a showcase of learning.  At 6:30 p.m. join us in the gym for a few highlights from our school talent show.  This was a big hit last year for both our students and families.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
~ Carol

Huron Ridge Fundraiser

Spring has arrived according to the calendar.  Hopefully Mother Nature will read the calendar and bring some warm weather.  Parent council has a spring flower fundraiser.  The flowers can be ordered through cash on line, or with the order form that was sent home to each family.  A flyer will also be posted on the parent council Facebook page. Order date is  April 20 and items will arrive at the school  May 8th.  Just in time for Mother’s Day!

From your Parent Advisory Council……

Spring has sprung!  We can hopefully soon say good bye to bulky clothing and bring out our spring wear. I know I can’t wait and the kids are itching to shed their boots and snow suits.

We hope everyone had a great March Break and are ready to face the last stretch of the school year – only 3 months left !

Parent Council had a great Little Caesars’ Fundraiser and want to thank everyone for supporting and we hope you are enjoying those tasty pizzas.

We seem to be dwindling down on support to help with the fundraisers – always the same few parents assisting with delivery, sorting and handing out product or helping with events at the school.  We need you to help us make functions and fundraisers a success and if everyone could take a turn assisting our current wonderful parents wouldn’t be scrambling to always adjust their schedules each time.  Please contact a Parent Council member or Principal Rauser if you can help – better yet come out to our next meeting on April 9th at 6:30 p.m.  We are always looking for fresh ideas and parent support at these meetings which take place only once a month – a tiny time to invest in your child’s school life.  Your support would help make council more innovative which in turn will help enhance your children’s experience at HCS.

Enjoy the last bit of winter and hoping to see some new faces at our next Parent Council meeting on April 9th.

Huron County Health Unit

The Huron County Health Unit will be visiting your school and offers the following dental programs:

  • Students in JK/SK, grade 2, 4, 6 and 8 classes will be included in a dental screening.  Children who have been previously identified by our program will also be seen. Any parent who wishes their child to be screened at school, other than those listed above, should notify the school before the scheduled screening date.
  • As a preventive service, topical fluoride applications, dental sealants and dental scaling will be offered to eligible children who have been screened at the school.
  • Financial help is available through the HSO-EESS program for children in urgent need of care where the cost of treatment would be a financial hardship.
  • A dental program called Healthy Smiles Ontario is available to help children 17 and under see dentists regularly. It is available for families living with low incomes.

Mindful Seeing: A Spring Scavenger Hunt

Now that the weather is nicer, it’s time to take our mindful practice outside. As with the other senses, mindful seeing helps to focus very purposefully on a specific object, task or situation. Mindful seeing strengthens our ability to better observe ourselves, other people, and our surroundings to more fully enjoy and learn from them.

Mindful seeing enhances the visual skills. Strengthening these skills improves critical thinking in almost any subject area. Social emotional skills are also strengthened and increase our ability to read social cues and respond according to other’s facial expressions and body language.

Mindful seeing can easily be practiced through a mindful scavenger hunt. As a family, make a list of various colours or shapes of objects. Head outside and try and discover how many objects you can find that fit this criteria. Take your list and try it in a different part of your neighbourhood. There’s lots to discover!

The book, I Spy School Days by Walter Wick and Jean Marzollo is a great resource to practice mindful seeing in a fun way. Take a look…how mindful are you?

Susan Barnett
I have taught music throughout elementary schools in Huron County for the last 30 yrs.   I am retiring from teaching school in June 2018.  I have taught private piano lessons in my home after school and weekends for the last 30 yrs. I conduct the choir at Lakeshore United Church.  I am also a Lay Worship Leader for United Churches in Huron County.  I am looking forward to teaching students how to play the piano during the day on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Huron Centennial; as well as Hullett on Fridays.  I prefer to teach students who are entering Grade 2 or older.

Valerie Dalton
I have been teaching piano at St. James Catholic school for the past 9 years (and I hope to continue this for many years to come). I am excited to start teaching at Huron Centennial this coming September! I love teaching all levels and abilities of piano (including a special kindergarten program that I offer for younger students). I include theory in my lessons and like to add extra challenges for my advanced players- including technique, duets & trios, popular music and history. I am excited to meet you at the recital and would welcome any questions! I will be teaching Mondays and Tuesdays at Huron Centennial.
