September 2018 Newsletter

Dear Families,

Welcome back to a new school year. It is an exciting time for most students and families. I am hoping you have had some time to rest, relax and had time to connect with family and friends.

We have had an increase in enrollment and now have a portable classroom in which the gr. 2/3 class will be located.

We at Eastdale will work to provide the best learning environment for your child. Your support is very much appreciated. We encourage and invite all partners to contact us at any time and we look forward to a wonderful school year.

Finally, thank you for your patience and assistance with the many pieces of paper that will have to travel to and from the school this week. The student information sheets and safe arrival sheets are extremely important as they assist us in assuring that we are providing the maximum safety for your child.
This will be the only paper copy of the newsletter sent home. Please contact the office if you wish to receive a paper copy each month. Newsletters and other pertinent information will continue to be sent home through School Messenger.

If at anytime you have questions, queries, suggestions, or compliments, please contact me at the school.
I am looking forward to another successful year.

Kind Regards,
Ross MacSorley

Stop and Drop Zone

At the front of the school there is a ‘Stop and Drop Zone’ for parents to drive into to drop off children.
Drive onto the yellow hash mark area.
Put the car in park.
Students exit the vehicle.
Adult stays in the car.
Children move to sidewalk area.
Adult drives out the other side.
Please watch for students entering the yard as you exit this zone.

This is only a drop off zone. We hope this will reduce the congestion on the street. There is only a barrier-free parking spot in this area. All other vehicles are to park in the North parking lot by the kindergarten rooms. The lot across the street is for staff parking.

Students entering the playground from the front of the school will follow the sidewalk before the Stop & Drop Zone up to the school and walk along the school to enter the yard. Students entering from the south are to stay tight to the fence to enter the yard.

Every child will be given an emergency form to bring home on the first day. It is important that a parent or guardian complete one for every child registered at Eastdale. Please make an extra effort to complete the necessary forms for your family and return them to the school by Friday, September 9th. Be sure to include alternate emergency contact information. Accurate information will make it much easier for us to help your child if and when there is an emergency. Thank you.

Snacks for Learning

We will begin our nutrition program shortly. We will be continuing the morning snack program that consists of bowls filled with a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and grain and dairy products in each classroom. These snacks are provided for every student every day. In order to keep this beneficial program going we ask that all families support it with donations of money or time as they are able. At this time we do not need donations of food. If you are able to volunteer your time for this program, please sign up on the attached volunteer sheet or if you have ideas or questions, please contact the school. Donations made to the “Foundation for Education” for Eastdale nutrition program are tax deductible. You can also donate through our Cash Online.

Bus Information

If your child rides the bus, please send a note to your child’s teacher to let them know if he/she will not be taking the bus home on a certain day. If we do not get a note or a phone call, your child will be taking the bus home.

Please also note that Kindergarten students will not be allowed off the bus at their stop if there is not an adult there to meet them. We are asking whoever picks up a Kindergarten student to go to the bus door and not stand across the street or stay in their vehicle.

Crossing Guards

Crossing guards will be assisting your children to cross the road at:

  • Wallace Ave. N and Campbell St.
  • Main St. W and Livingston Ave.
  • Main St. E and Nichol Ave.

Crossing guards are on duty from 8:00-9:00 a.m. and 3:00-4:00 p.m.
There will be no crossing guards on duty over nutrition breaks.

Student planners are available for all students from Gr. 1-6 at the cost of $6.00. You can pay for them through Cash OnLine. These planners are a great form of communication between home and school and they help your child become better organized while keeping your family aware of events and homework.

Nut Safe School

Listowel Eastdale Public School has adopted a school-wide ban on nuts and will work with all parents to provide the safest possible learning environment for all students.

Lunch Procedures

The first nutrition break (11:00-11:40) will be our main lunch time. Students wishing to go home for lunch may go during the first break — if they bring a note from home indicating permission to leave the school grounds for lunch.

Milk will be on sale for 75 cents. You can purchase 20 milk for $15.00 from Cash OnLine or the office.

Safe Arrival and Attendance

Please call the school to report when your child is going to be absent. The school number is 519-291-2930. We have a 24-hour answering machine. You can also email the school at our main address,
If we do not hear from you, we will make safe arrival phone calls to you and the emergency contacts until we get confirmation of your child’s whereabouts. This can be a time consuming process. It also means that if a child is lost or in trouble we are having to spend time making calls to families who didn’t contact the school.
Please help us keep your child safe by informing us of absences.

Summer Cleaning

If your child has located any school textbooks or library books during their summer room cleaning, please return them to the school. We would be thrilled to have them back, no questions asked.

Sabrina’s Law and Anaphylaxis

In January 2006, Sabrina’s Law came into effect. This Law requires school boards to have emergency procedures in place to deal with incidents of anaphylaxis and to provide training for all staff. With support from the Perth District Health Unit and the Huron County Health Unit, school principals provide to their staff, annual training in the administration of EPI-Pens to treat anaphylactic reactions.
In cases where a student is anaphylactic, parents/guardians are expected to provide an EPI-Pen(s) for their child to carry with them at all times during the school day. Parents/Guardians must also work with the school to develop an Individual Medical Management Plan that outlines emergency procedures for their child.

In accordance with Sabrina’s Law, all schools have been provided with two generic EPI-Pens. These EPI-Pens are being provided to support schools in responding to a medical emergency for an anaphylactic student for whom the school has an Individual Medical Management Plan and Emergency Procedure in place. Also, in accordance with Sabrina’s Law, schools must administer an EPI-Pen when a student is suspected of suffering an anaphylactic reaction even if no Individual Medical Management Plan exists.

If you are aware that your child is allergic to epinephrine or if you have any concerns, it is suggested that you contact the school principal.

Kids Plus™ Accident Insurance

Our school board is offering you the opportunity to voluntarily purchase student accident insurance through the Kids Plus™ Accident Insurance program, underwritten by Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc. (iA Financial Group).

Kids Plus™ Accident Insurance provides protection against unexpected costs arising from accidental injuries. The program is especially valuable for families who:

  • do not have medical or dental plans,
  • have limited plans, as it may help supplement health and dental benefits, or
  • have active children who enjoy sports and outdoor activities.

Kids Plus™ Accident Insurance has a selection of plans to suit most budgets. Benefits include coverage for:

  • The full school year (September to September), 24 hours a day, while at home and in school;
  • Expenses that are often limited or not covered by private or group insurance plans, or Provincial Health Insurance Plans, such as ambulance, physiotherapy, private tutoring, counselling, and much more;
  • Injury-related dental treatment (including future dental treatment up to age 26);
  • Out-of-province or country emergency medical expenses.

If your address changes during the school year, your Kids Plus™ Accident Insurance plan is transferable from school to school, anywhere in Canada.

Insurance premiums for children are $14.50 or $33.50 per year, depending on the plan selected. A discount is available for families with 3 or more children. Adults age 20 to 64 can also be insured for $32.00 per year.

Custody Arrangement and Access to Legal Documents

On occasion, school authorities are asked to enforce certain clauses in Custody and Access Documents. In order for the school personnel to do this, we must have a copy of the legal document, which you received, from the Courts containing this specific information. We will gladly make copies of this information for you and store it in your child (ren’s) files.

Field Trips

Field trips must relate to specific educational expectations. The teacher(s) will set duration and location of the trip. Parent volunteers are appreciated. We do require a valid police record check be on file for each of our volunteers. Forms to obtain this are available from the office. If you have previously completed a police check for Eastdale you will not have to do it again. Pre-school children are not invited to participate in school trips.

School Correspondence

Most correspondence from the school will be sent home with the youngest or only family member. If the information pertains to a particular class or student, every student in the class will receive a copy of the correspondence (i.e. field trip)

Danger of Strangulation

Each year in Canada, thousands of children get hurt at the playground playing on slides, monkey bars or swings. Some children have died when their clothing or drawstrings got caught on playground equipment or fences. Some children have died when they became entangled in ropes or skipping ropes attached to playground equipment. Loose clothing, hoods, scarves, drawstrings, mitten cords, ropes and skipping ropes can strangle a child! Please keep this in mind when choosing clothing for school.

School Cash Online

If you have not already done so, we encourage you to register for School Cash Online.  Not only will it allow you to go ‘cashless’ for most of Eastdale’s payments, you will also receive email reminders of upcoming payments and notifications of new payments available for your child(ren).

School Council

The first school council meeting will be Monday, Sept. 24th from 6:30- 7:45 p.m. in the staff room. Everyone is welcome. Nominations and elections for School Council will occur at that time. We will review our fundraising budget. If you have questions about the council or election process, please call the school.

This is a nomination form for the council. For your personal candidacy please complete the form and return to the school by September 21st, If you are nominating a parent or guardian of a student attending this school then he/or she must be contacted in advance and be in agreement with the submission.

Elections will be held at the first school council meeting on Sept. 24th, 2018.

Ryan’s Law , Ensuring Asthma Friendly Schools

As you may be aware, Ryan’s Law, 2015, was recently passed by the Ontario Legislature. This piece of legislation is an important step to support the well-being of students with asthma in Ontario schools. If your child has asthma, we ask that you immediately contact the main office at your school to provide information about your child’s asthma medication. With your permission, your child will be allowed to carry his/her asthma medication while at school. The Ministry of Education website has resources on asthma. As a best practice and to support your child, please let the school know if your child has a medical condition so that the school is aware and can keep this information on file. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Animals at School or on the School Yard

In the interest of your pet’s safety, parents, guardians and caregivers are reminded that pets will sometimes react differently if strangers approach them. Children are often excited to see new animals and sometimes forget that their sudden moves can cause a pet to react in unknown ways. Please be sure to plan ahead so that no undue concerns arise for you or your pet. It is best to leave pets at home.

AMDSB SchoolMessenger

The Avon Maitland District School Board is excited to have a service that will enhance communication by allowing us to deliver important information to you via text messaging.

SchoolMessenger is intended to enhance our existing methods of communication – not replace them.
