The school year has begun very smoothly at Eastdale. Students and staff are into routine for the most part. We welcome Miss. Shelby Roth, who will be covering Mrs. Kelly’s maternity leave until the end of June. We wish Mrs. Kelly all the best during her leave. Here’s hoping the weather works in our favour so students can be outside for fresh air at recess and some gym classes. Please be sure to check the weather so your child is dressed appropriately, as sometimes the sun may not be as warm as it looks. During the first month, we have had a number of safety drills so students and staff are aware of what to do and where to go in the event an unusual situation arises so everyone is in the best possible safety location. Drills will continue during the month of October. At the end of the month Progress Report Cards will come home. If you have questions about the report, please contact the teacher for clarification. Interviews will be conducted the evening of Thursday, November 1st and the morning of Friday, November 2nd. More information will come home about these dates. The soccer team and cross country team are in full swing with the meets and tournament coming over the next few weeks. Please contact the school if you have any questions, suggestions, or compliments.

Due to the regulations in the Physical Education Safety Guidelines, it is mandatory for all children to wear running shoes for this class. Students will not be able to participate if proper footwear is not worn.
All students must sign in and out at the office, if they are arriving or leaving outside the regular entry and dismissal times.
As well, visitors, volunteers and parents entering the school during the school day must check in at the office before going anywhere else in the school.
Who Has Access to an OSR?
The information in an OSR is available only to supervisory officers, the principal and the teachers of the school for the purpose of improving the instruction of the student. Written permission is requested for any outside agency/personnel to access the OSR.
All students, and the parents/guardians of students under 18 years of age, have the right to examine the OSR and to receive a copy of its contents, if they so desire. Contact the Principal for details of the procedure to be followed.
Yard supervision does not begin until 8:45 a.m. It is in place from 8:45 – 8:55 a.m. and after school from 3:20 – 3:30. Please do not send or bring your children earlier than 8:45 or have them stay later than 3:30, as there will be no one on the yard to supervise them.
The front of the school has been designated a school bus loading zone. No parking or stopping will be allowed on the street during the school day. Parents are welcome to park in the lot beside the kindergarten classrooms.

If you child rides the bus, please call the office or send a note to your child’s teacher to let them know if he/she will not be taking the bus home on a certain day. If we do not get a note or a phone call, your child will be taking the bus home.
Please also note that Kindergarten students will not be allowed off the bus at their stop if there is not an adult there to meet them.

Step 1) Register your student (s) online (paper copies can be picked up from the office if you prefer)
Step 2) Call the school to book an appointment time

We have a number of people in the school who have life-threatening allergies. We are asking for your help to keep them safe.
- Do not send any type of nut or nut product to school – this includes peanut butter, nutella, almond butter etc.
- Please do not send the product “WOW butter” to school – although it is labelled “nut free” it is very difficult for staff and students to tell the difference between WOW butter and peanut butter.
- Please do not send shellfish or crustaceans – shrimp, crab, lobster, crayfish, oysters, mussels, scallops or clams.
- As well, this year we will ask that pets not be brought into the school for show and tell or as class pets, until you have checked with the office.
Safe Arrival and Attendance
Please call or email the school to report when your child is going to be absent. The school number is 519-291-2930. We have a 24-hour answering machine.
If you are calling the school during school hours, hit “0” as soon as the voice recording starts. This allows you to skip the automated service and get right to Mrs. Cox at the office.
If we do not hear from you, we will make safe arrival phone calls to you and the emergency contacts until we get confirmation of your child’s whereabouts. This can be a time consuming process. It also means that if a child is lost or in trouble we are wasting time making calls to families who didn’t bother to contact the school.
Please help us keep your child safe by informing us of absences.
Ryan’s Law—Managing Asthma at School
As you may be aware, Ryan’s Law, 2015, was passed by the Ontario Legislature. This piece of legislation is an important step to support the well-being of students with asthma in Ontario schools.
If your child has asthma, we ask that you immediately contact the main office at your school to provide information about your child’s asthma medication. Your child will be allowed to carry their asthma medication.
As a best practice and to support your child, please let the school know if your child has a medical condition so that the school is aware and can keep this information on file. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.
Before and After School Program
As part of our on-going commitment to make the school day as seamless as possible for our families, we ask parents/guardians to share their tentative childcare needs for September of the next school year (2019) by completing an online survey. The survey will be available October 1, 2018 and can be found on the AMDSB website.
Families that are interested in Before and After school programs for their Junior/Senior Kindergarten children and/or grade 1 – 6 children are asked to complete the survey by December 1, 2018.
We appreciate your assistance as we determine the feasibility of offering such programs.
If you require a paper copy, please contact the school.
Head Lice at Eastdale
Thank you to those parents who have made us aware that their children have been treated for head lice. This enables us to notify other families that their child may have been exposed to the nasty critters should it be necessary. Please continue to check your child’s hair and report any “findings” to the office.
Volunteers and Criminal Record Checks
Thanks to everyone who has indicated an interest in volunteering at LEPS. In order to keep our volunteer practices consistent, we ask that all parents and community members who volunteer at our school whether on a regular basis or on an occasional basis such as field trips, complete a Criminal Reference Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check.
