February 2019 Newsletter

Principal’s Message

We have completed 5 months of school which means we are half way through the school year.

February is a busy month and students are immersed in a variety of academic projects and activities. On Thursday, March 21st School Council is hosting a Family Math Night from 6—8 pm. We hope you can attend.

Our first term report cards will be coming home on February 19th.  Please  complete and return the bottom portion of page 4 of the report card in the envelope in which the report came home. If you wish to discuss the report card with your child’s teacher, please indicate this on the return form.

Please call the school if your child is going to be absent especially on weather days as this reduces the number of calls made from the school to make sure all students are safe.

We welcome a couple new staff—Mr. Iain Beauregard an Education Assistant and Ms. Athena Edgar who is covering for Mrs. Baxter while she is on a planned leave for 5 months.

A reminder when dropping students off in the Kiss and Drop zone to pull completely forward so more cars can pull in and unload at the same time. You don’t need to be the front of the line to unload. Also, please allow cars turning left into the zone to pull in so traffic  can  keep  flowing  when  exiting  the   school.

Virtue for February: Perseverance

Perseverance is sticking with something and being committed, no matter how long it takes or what obstacles appear in your way. With- out perseverance, people give up on things easily. They don’t keep their  promises.  When we persevere, people can depend on us to finish what we start and to keep our commitments.

Valentine’s Day – February 14th

On February 14th we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day. It will be wear Red, White or Pink Day.

March and April Pizza and Pita Pit Orders

The March & April food orders will be available through Cash OnLine from February 15—27th.

Weather

If there are to be weather issues such as bus cancellations or delays, or other such messages there are 4 places the information will be posted.

  1. On Twitter (the feed is available on the Eastdale website top right corner)
  2. On the Listowel Eastdale Facebook page
  3. On ourschoolbuses.ca website — information about all the schools will be posted
  4. You can receive a text and email through School

You can also listen to the local radio stations. I try really hard to have everything posted by 6:30 a.m., but sometimes the process gets in the way and it’s a bit later.

Also note that unless Hwy #23 and Hwy#86 are both closed it will be very unlikely that the school will be closed.

SchoolMessenger—Texting option

Our Board has a system called SchoolMessenger. With this system we can email or text you to let you know updates or cancellations and to send out our Newsletter etc. If you do not receive our texts and would like to, please text YES from your cellphone to 978338. It may be particularly helpful for you to receive a text on a weather day.

School Council

The next school council meeting will be February 4th from 6:30 p.m.—7:45 p.m.

Everyone is welcome. Babysitting is provided.

Chess Club

The chess club has been meeting on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays since the 2nd week of January. There have been between 30 and 55 students attending during 2nd recess. We have many returning club members, and lots of Grade 3’s coming out to see what the game is all about.

Learning the game of chess takes time and practise. It is great to see so many members attending on a regular basis to better their playing skills. If you have questions about the club, please contact warren.wray@ed.amdsb.ca.

Safe Arrival

If your child is going to be absent from school, please call the school at 519-291- 2930 ext. 1 or 2 and leave a message or e-mail lynn.cox@ed.amdsb.ca anytime. The Safe Arrival Telephone Program is used in the event that your child is absent and we have not been contacted. This is to ensure that your child is safe and not at home alone (as a result of missing the bus, having an accident at home while waiting to leave, etc.). Please be assured that we will make every effort to contact you or your emergency contacts in the event that your child is not at school and you have not contacted us.

Yard Supervision

Yard supervision does not begin until 8:45 a.m.  It is in place from 8:45-8:55 a.m. and after school from 3:20-3:30 p.m. Please do not send or bring your children earlier than 8:45 or have them stay later than 3:30, as there will be no one in the yard to supervise them.

Medication At School

If medications are sent to school with your child there are required forms that need to be filled out for both prescription and non prescription medications. They can be filled out at the office when medication is brought to the office by  the parent.

LEPS is Nut Free

Listowel Eastdale has adopted a  schoolwide ban on nuts and will work with all parents to provide the safest possible learning environment for all students.

Family Math Night

Come one, come all to our Family Math Night at Eastdale! Our school council has planned an exciting evening for all families on Thurs., March 21 from 6 – 8 p.m.  This is an opportunity for parents and children to have fun together doing math.  Yes, math and fun go hand in hand! There will be over 100 different games and activities set up for families and students from kindergarten to grade 6 to enjoy together.

Note that the evening is a game format – no calculations required! Parents will also take home ideas for supporting their child’s math learning at home in fun, engaging ways.

During the evening, each student will receive a “passport” to collect stickers for each activity. Completed passports can be entered into draws.
