It is December already! Are you asking yourself how can this be already? We sure are. There is holiday glitter all around and the excitement of Christmas is building. Understandably, it makes it a little more challenging for some students to persevere on academic tasks.
I would like to take this opportunity to highlight December 18th as the day we welcome you for our Holiday Show (Christmas Concert). Once again, we have staggered the performances by grades to ensure a great experience for everyone. Our kindergarten educators believe that our kindergarten students do their best first thing in the morning when they are refreshed, rather than in the evening after a long day at school, so KA, KB, KC, and KD will perform at 9:30 a.m. Then our students in 1A, 1B, 1C/2A will perform at 12:00 p.m. This will be followed by a performance by 2B, 2C, 2D3A at 1:45 p.m. In the evening students in 3B, 3C, 3D4A will perform at 6:30 p.m.
This schedule will mean that you will be able to find a parking spot easier and should ensure too that there will be a spot for you, members of your family, and other guests to comfortably watch your child perform without the gym being unsafely overcrowded.
As always there are many special events taking place in the month of December. We will try our very best to keep you well informed so that you can plan well and stay on top of them as we appreciate that your homes will be extra busy this time of year too.
I sincerely hope that you find time to restore your soul and stimulate your spirit over the holidays if this is what is needed. I find time spent with children as well as sneaking off with a warm drink to enjoy some time quiet time works well to do this. I am excited about spending some holiday time with my family while reflecting on how truly fortunate that I am. I hope you have the same opportunity.
As always, if you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns please feel free to drop by the office, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call me at the school 519-357-3551. I am here to listen, learn, and help too.
With Respect and Appreciation,
Maitland River Elementary School
Virtue for December: Compassion
Compassion is having kind feelings toward someone who is hurt or troubled. It is caring deeply and wanting to help, even if you don’t know them. It is being kind and forgiving to someone who has hurt you.
Compassion begins by noticing when someone seems sad or troubled. Put yourself in their place and ask how you would feel if it were happening to you. Think about how you can help. Take time to listen. Be a friend when someone needs a friend.
House Team News
Thursday, December 20th, we will meet in our House Teams. We will be combining our house meeting with a carol sing just before at 10:00 am. For an added challenge, students are asked to wear their PJs to match their house colour. Doing so will be worth extra house points!
The house teams will be talking about ways to demonstrate compassion and generosity at our house team meetings this month. As well we will continue to work on our goal of spreading peace throughout our school. We are also working on keeping our learning spaces neat and tidy. This is especially important now that winter clothing and boots are added to our coat rack spaces.

Dress for the Weather
Please remember to send your child(ren) to school with appropriate clothing as the weather begins to get colder. Boots, hats and mitts are a must. Please ensure that your child has a pair of indoor shoes to wear. A change of clothes is always a good idea.
Lost and Found
As our lost and found grows, we encourage students to have their items of clothing tagged with their name for easy returns. Please remember that the lost and found is cleaned out during the holiday breaks and will be donated. Please check it for your child’s lost items on a regular basis.

Getting Ready for Winter!
How do I know when buses are cancelled and/or my school is closed?
We all know that winter is here and with comes it the occasional winter storm. Huron Perth Student Transportation Services is making it even easier this year to get your school bus delay and cancellation information. Already you can follow the announcements by going directly to the Huron Perth School Transportation Services website.
You can get the information too by following MRES’s Twitter or Facebook account. If you have a Twitter account this is great, but you don’t need to have a Twitter account to get this information, as the latest Tweets appear on the main page of the school’s website.
As in the past, you can also monitor local radio stations during inclement weather for the latest announcements on cancellations or delays. For further information please visit the Huron Perth Student Transportation Services website or call 1-888-871-7722.

Here is the process:
2. Attach a cheque for your chosen amount. The cheque must be made payable to the Foundation For Education who will issue a charitable tax receipt for the full amount.
3. Return this Form and cheque to your school to be forwarded to the Foundation.

Maitland River Elementary School has adopted a school-wide ban on nuts and will work with all parents to provide the safest possible learning environment for all students.
When students arrive late they are interrupting class instruction by the teacher and the learning of the other students. School starts at 9:00 am – please ensure your child/ren are here on time. Thank you.
