March 2019 Newsletter

We’ve had some interesting weather over the past few weeks, and while we are getting nearer to the spring, there may still be some unpredictable days ahead. We really appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding where weather days are concerned. Information is shared with us early about bus cancellations, and we pass that information along as quickly as we can. There have been days where the Board has gone a step further and closed sites, including ours, and that announcement often comes later than bus announcements. As always, we will continue to share the information with families and staff as quickly as we can, to help minimize trouble spots in the morning. As we move forward into the melting conditions of spring, we may encounter foggy days, which can sometimes delay our start. In the same way as with snowy days, please check the Huron Perth Transportation website for the latest information about delays or cancellations.

Report cards also went home this past month, and as a result of those reports, or at any time going forward, I would encourage families to connect with classroom teacher to clarify any questions about classroom programming and assessments, or any other areas related to student achievement and wellbeing. If you require support from the office, please feel free to connect as well.

School Tubing Trip – Rescheduled Date Fast Approaching

Our Grade 3-8 tubing trip, rescheduled from January, will take place on Monday, March 4th. Students will arrive and leave from the school at regular time. Any parent volunteers who are planning to attend are welcome to meet at the school to arrange ride sharing, or drive directly to the hill, as there is not sufficient space on the bus for parent volunteers. Looking ahead, it may be a chilly day, but certainly not as cold as our January date. Students are reminded to dress appropriately for cold, outdoor conditions, and bring any type of helmet suitable for outdoor activities. Helmets are available for rent at the hill if students do not have their own. We are looking forward to another great tubing event – many students shared that this was one of their favourite events last year!

Budding Artists Fundraiser

Thanks to the staff in Grades K to 8 for their support of the Budding Artists fundraiser, currently underway. Students are creating original works of art and those art pieces can be transposed onto mugs, t-shirts, and a number of other items, perfect for gifts for family and friends. All proceeds from the fundraiser go to support our Primary Playground project. Order forms will be going home after the March Break, along with the artworks, and are due back to the office by no later than March 29th.

Playground/Yard Improvements Update

Our new primary playground equipment is well established at this point, having already endured some wintry weather. School Council has developed a plan for the final phase of yard improvements, with the installation of an electronic sign at the front of the school. Installation of the new sign will take place in the spring, and will help us to share information and upcoming events with all in our community. We will possibly require some assistance with landscaping, and new flagpoles once the sign is in place. If you are interested in donating time or financial supports to the project, please contact the school for more information.

Random Act of (Pizza) Kindness

During the regular food days in the first week of March, all students who regularly order pizza will still receive their regular order. However, to ensure everyone has a chance to take part in food days, we are providing one slice to all students who might not otherwise receive pizza. Students in Grade K-5 will receive their pizza on Tuesday, March 19th, and the Grade 6-8 students will receive theirs on Friday, March 22nd. An extra special thanks to one of our students who donated money they earned to support this initiative!

School Spirit Days

Thanks to everyone who participated in our recent Pink Shirt Day, to raise awareness of anti-bullying efforts both at the school and across the nation. We have a number of events throughout the year, both to encourage school spirit, as well as observe other important events, causes, or considerations. Thanks to everyone for their support of these days, and more importantly showing their school spirit during our fun days as well.

EQAO Provincial Assessment

Each year, Grade 3 and 6 students participate in the Education Quality and Assurance Office (EQAO) provincial assessments. Students are assessed, over several days, on their language and numeracy skills. The results of the assessments provide some information about individual student achievement, and also provide the school and Board with a set of data to determine next steps in school improvement planning. This year, the EQAO assessments will be taking place from Tuesday, May 21st to Monday, June 3rd. Students will not be writing the assessments each of these days, but will be using many of these days to complete the work. I wanted to share these dates well ahead so that hopefully families can plan around these days. It is important that students are present as much as possible during this time, so if you are planning medical appointments, or family trips in the Spring, please keep these dates in mind. In the past, we have appreciated the support of community volunteers to help support the administration of the assessments for Grade 3 and 6 students. We will, once again this year, require assistance with supervision and scribing for some students. If you, or someone you know, may be able to assist during the assessment, please let us know at the school.

April and May Food Orders

The final food order opportunity for the year will be sent home on Friday, March 8th for April and May. Please note that these orders will need to be returned by no later than Tuesday, March 19th. We realize that this is a short turn around, but appreciate the efforts of all families to meet this deadline. Unfortunately, we will not be able to accept late orders.
