Dear North Easthope Families:
It is hard to believe that we are already through our first month of school! Hopefully we will continue to enjoy some summer like weather as we head into Fall. We have had a fantastic beginning to the 2018-2019 school year. We have participated in our Terry Fox Walk/Run and for the 12th year in a row we have been able to donate money to the Terry Fox Foundation. This year our total donation was $285. It was wonderful to welcome so many families to our Open House as well.
As Summer turns to Fall, we are looking forward to many exciting events in October. Our grade 2-8 students have been busy practicing for Cross Country. We have many students who will be showing their talents and join schools from Huron and Perth Counties at the annual Pat Cook Run at the SERC site in Stratford on October 2nd and at the AMDSB Regional Meet on October 4th at Wildwood Conservation Area. We will be welcoming the University of Waterloo to each of our classrooms this month as part of the “Let’s Talk Science Program” and we will be hosting our 2nd Family Math Night. Parents can expect to receive a Progress Report on October 29th and follow up interviews will be held later that week.
I look forward to another great month of learning and growing with all of our students and families. Enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday with friends and family. As always, if you have any questions, concerns or celebrations please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.
Mrs. Jo Anne Knechtel
Thanksgiving Food Drive
Our Intermediate students will be running a food drive to benefit the Stratford House of Blessing, October 3-4. Any non-perishable food item is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your generosity. Thanks to Ms. Vallance, Mr. Garland and the Grade 7 and 8 students for organizing this event to help our community.
Family Math Night
Mark your calendar and save the date for our Family Math Night. School Council will be hosting a Family Math night on Tuesday, October 16th from 6 – 8 p.m. This is a chance for your entire family to enjoy a game together and enter a draw for a great prize. Thanks to School Council for sponsoring this event. We hope to welcome as many families in attendance as possible!
Intermediate Girls and Boys Soccer
Congratulations to the Girls and Boys Intermediate Soccer Teams and Coaches Mlle. Miller and Mrs. Smith for an outstanding demonstration of sportsmanship and skill at the AMDSB tournament. The Girls’ team came away with a First place finish for the tournament. Well done Eagles!
Junior Mixed Soccer
Congratulations to our Junior Mixed Soccer Team for an excellent demonstration of skills and determination at your tournament. Thanks to Coach Smith and Coach Hutchinson for leading this group of great players. Well done Eagles!
School Advisory Council
We met as a Council on September 13th and welcomed new members to the table. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered for a Council position or who is a Member at Large. School Council plays a vital role in the school community and I would like to thank everyone for your support of this group. Elections were as follows: Chair: Melissa Hinds, Secretary/Treasurer: Kim Cook, Parent Representatives: Tonia Streicher, Tiffany Wurdell, Kirsten Dill, Jodie Evans, Jessie Wilhelm and Tiffany Cook. Our Community Representative is Pat Eidt. Council meets several times throughout the school year. Dates and times will be published in the School Newsletter and posted on our Communication Sign and Twitter. The next meeting is Thursday, November 8th at 6:30 pm in the library. Everyone is welcome to attend. Contact the school office or School Council Chair, Melissa Hinds, email@example.com with questions. Please contact the office at least two days prior to the council meeting if you are in need of childcare at the school in order to attend the meeting.
This year School Council has made plans to fundraise using the following events – Gifts Cards (October), Rheo Thompson Mint Smoothie Bars (November), Elmira Poultry (February) and Little Caesar’s Pizza Kits (April). Thanks to your support of these efforts School Council will be able to support the following: Bussing and entry fees, outdoor play items – specifically new swings and lining of the soccer fields, school and classroom libraries, technology, Gr. 8 graduation, Math Night, Music program, the Holiday meal, Eat and Learn, June School Barbeque and student benevolent fund. Thank you to our parent volunteers who organize these fundraisers and to everyone who supports them.
A big thank you goes out from the students and staff!
If parents prefer to make a donation to the school instead of participating in other fundraising events please contact the school office. A donation can be made to the Foundation for Education Perth Huron and designated to NEH PS. A tax receipt will be issued for a donation over $20.00.
Communication from the Office
Please be sure to follow what is happening at school and in our community on Twitter @NortheasthopePS. These Twitter messages also feed directly to our school website. Our website has up to date information on the calendar of school events, past newsletters, school council meeting minutes, information from the AMDSB and other events that are relevant to our school. Please be sure to check out the website and bookmark it for easy access. Our website, newsletter and Twitter are the key locations to find out accurate information for our school. We will use School Messenger to send out notices and information to parents via text and email.
Please Send Extra Clothes!
If you have a Kindergarten to Grade 3 child, please send a change of clothing in a ziploc plastic bag with their name on it to keep at school (in case of accidents e.g. mud, spilled drinks or minor bathroom accidents). This will avoid having to contact you to bring clean clothes. Any spare clothing that your child has outgrown will be gratefully accepted and will be kept in the office for emergencies.
Hot Lunch and Milk Programs
Hot Lunch and Milk Programs are now up and running. You will be able to order for one month at a time with the online ordering system. Thank you to everyone who has signed up for School Cash Online and placed your order. A big thank you to Tonia Streicher and Mrs. Brace for getting our Hot Lunch and Milk programs up and going this year! Thank you as well to our Grade 7/8 student helpers for preparing milk buckets for the classrooms each day.
There is excitement in the air each Friday as our Fresh Friday program is now up and running. Each Friday, a group of parent volunteers come to the school to prepare a fresh snack for all of our students. (Or Tuesday if Friday is not a school day). We have enjoyed cheese and crackers, corn on the cob donated by the Stever family and popcorn and juice. We will also be enjoying boiled eggs from Gary West and the Ontario Egg Produces. Thank you to the Shakespeare Men’s Club for a generous donation to our Eat and Learn Program as well. We are fortunate that NEH families have extra garden bounty to share with us. Also, a big thank you to Julie Moore for organizing the volunteers, purchasing the food and stocking the green bins for our students to enjoy every day! Every student will have the opportunity to eat an apple as part of The Big Crunch on October 18th. Thank you to all of the volunteers who make this amazing project happen for our students.
Calling All Three Year Olds (CATYO)
Kindergarten registration for children born in 2015 (2014 if not already registered) will be held at North Easthope School on November 29th in the morning. Please call the school to make an appointment and also pass this information on to neighbours, family and friends in our area.
Visitors to the School and/or Dropping Off/Picking Up Students
In the interest of school safety, we ask that everyone use the front door by the office to enter the school. Please ensure that you inform the office of your visit. Please do not go to the classrooms before and after the school day begins or during regular classes. Teachers are busy preparing lessons and assignments during these times or working with students. Mrs. Brace and Mrs. Knechtel are available to assist you. Students are not to be picked up on the yard during recess time. Come to the office and we will get your child for you. If a child is to be picked up during school hours, please send a note signed by the parent to the homeroom teacher or call the school and let the office know. The note should indicate the date, time and reason for having to leave the school. A note written in the child’s planner to be shown to the teacher and office works well. When you arrive to pick up your child, you must check in at the office and fill in the student sign in/out clipboard.
Each year, North Easthope Public School runs a wide variety of programs that depend on the time and talent of volunteers. Some of these events are one day/afternoon/evening only and some programs run for a large portion of the year. If you are interested in being contacted to support any of the following programs, please contact the classroom teacher or the main office. Your interest in this does not commit you to these programs, however when a need arises, we will contact you to see if you are interested and available. All volunteers for school programs or excursions require a Criminal Background and Vulnerable Screening Check done through the OPP. These forms are available through the office at the school. Please note that this process does take some time so completing these in advance of your volunteer time is necessary. Once you have completed this process, there will be an Offence Declaration form that will be sent home from the school each year that simply requires you to sign and return to the school. We recognize the busy schedules that you have and truly appreciate the time that you give to our students here at North Easthope PS. If you have any questions about any of these programs, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
North Easthope EQAO Results for 2017-18
Ontario students write province-wide assessments of their reading and writing and math skills at key stages of their education. Last school year our Grade 3 and Grade 6 students completed these assessments. AMDSB School and Board staff have reviewed our results and once again North Easthope Public School students have done very well in almost all of the areas. We will use the school, board and province results to guide our work this year. We will continue to improve our skills in math, reading and writing. Individual student results will be going home to families. If you have any questions with regards to your son or daughter’s test results please contact the office. You are able to view school, board and provincial results online (Click on the Parent tab and then type in North Easthope PS).
Scent Free and Nut Safe School
Parents and students, when coming into the school please consider those with allergies and refrain from using perfumes/colognes and avoid sending nuts or nut products to school. Some students have a life-threatening allergy to peanuts and other nuts. An allergic reaction could cause the child’s airway to clamp down and fill with mucous. Ultimately, without immediate medical treatment, death could occur. As this is a serious problem, please be sure to do the following when preparing lunches and snacks for school:
- Do not use peanut butter, Nutella or other products containing nuts
- Check all ingredients and labels on packages to ensure no nuts are in the products
- Wash the face and hands of your child if peanut butter or other nuts were used at home
- On occasions when you may want to send in treats for the classroom, please ensure all items are nut free and check with the classroom for other possible allergens.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation with this potentially life-threatening allergy.
3:15 Pick Up Instead of Riding Bus
On the rare occasion that you need to pick up your child(ren) at 3:15 instead of them riding the bus home, send a note or write it in their planner so that the teacher and office know ahead of time. You are also required to sign your child out on the clipboard in the lobby. When you need to pick up your child unexpectedly, the school needs a phone call before 2:00. After that time, there is a risk that a phone message may not be picked up by dismissal time.
Before and After School Program for the 2019-2020
As part of our on-going commitment to make the school day as seamless as possible for our families, we ask parents/guardians to share their tentative childcare needs for September of the next school year (2019) by completing an online survey. The survey will be available October 1, 2018 and can be found on the AMDSB website.
Families that are interested in Before and After school programs for their Junior/Senior Kindergarten children and/or grade 1 – 6 children are asked to complete the survey by December 1, 2018.
We appreciate your assistance as we determine the feasibility of offering such programs.
If you require a paper copy, please contact the school.
NEH Bus Delays or School Closure Procedure
Due to the nature of the weather conditions that we may experience, there will be times that our school buses may be cancelled or delayed.
- In the case of fog, the bus company and Transportation department, may issue a 2 hour delay for our buses. In cases where North Easthope PS experiences a 2 hour bus delay, the school will be open for students when they can arrive safely beginning at 8:55 a.m.
- If the bus delay becomes a cancellation after the start of the regular school day, then the school will remain open for those students who have arrived, however parents/guardians will be responsible for student transportation at the end of the school day as buses will not be running.
- In the case of bus cancellations due to inclement weather, the school may be open to students. Check the School Bus Planner Website for details about closures often.
The most up to date and accurate information about bus delays or cancellations is found at https://ourschoolbuses.ca/. If you save this website address in your browser be sure to refresh it each time you look up cancellations or delays.
All bus delays, school closures or early closures will be announced in the following manner:
*Please note: North Easthope PS cancellations will be listed under “Stratford Rural”.
- CKNX 920 AM or CKNX 101.7 FM, Wingham
- CJCS 1240 Stratford
- North Easthope Twitter @NortheasthopePS
- The Twitter message will go directly to our school webpage as well
