December 2018 Newsletter

Dear North Easthope Families:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Hinz and the students and staff who created a beautiful tribute to all those people in our past, present and future, who have stood up for the freedom that we enjoy today during our Remembrance Day ceremony. Our students are a true reflection of peacemakers in our world who allow each and every one of us to live in peace at school as well. We were also so proud to welcome 2nd Lieutenant Taso Bujouves to NEH PS. He presented to the students his role as a Peacekeeper. He also visited all of the students in their classrooms during the school day. He commented on the amazing assembly the students presented. A special thank you to all of the parents, grandparents and family members who joined us for this ceremony. Your presence and support is always greatly appreciated.

We would like to extend a thank you and congratulations to all of our student athletes who played volley ball this season. An Eagle call out also goes out to our Coaches – Ms. vanZuilen, Ms. Hutchinson, Mlle. Miller and Mrs. Wilkinson. We came away with a Gold, Silver and Bronze at the regional tournaments. Go Eagles Go!!

Congratulations to Ms. Susan Browning, our Grade 1/2 teacher, for receiving a Champion of Inclusion award at the recent Coaching to Inclusion Conference held in London. Ms. Browning was chosen from nominated educators in the AMDSB.

We celebrated a Wacky Hair school Spirit Day and continued to raise funds to help others in Tanzania. We will celebrate a Red, Green and White Spirit Day in December. Thanks to the Kindness Krew and Student Council for planning these events for our students.

Our students, under the enthusiastic guidance of Mrs. Hinz, have been working very hard to prepare for our annual Holiday concert. All of our students have the opportunity to take part in this presentation. Concert dates are listed below.

Thanks again to our School Advisory Council who help to plan and fundraise for many special events at NEH PS. They will be hosting a special time – Cocoa, Cookies and Carols PJ Party- for the entire school on December 14th. Thanks in advance for any help and support that you can give to this exciting event.

As we move through December and into the holiday season, I wish you and your families a very happy holiday filled with peace, laughter, family and friends.

As always, if you have any questions, concerns or celebrations, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

Mrs. Jo Anne Knechtel

Book Fair

Once again our Fall Book Fair was a great success! Thanks to Mrs. Smitjes for organizing this Fair for all of the students. Thanks to all of our families who purchased items from the Book Fair, North Easthope PS earned almost $1000 in credit towards books from Scholastic for our school and classroom libraries. Thank you for your ongoing support and ever growing enthusiasm for books.

Fall Fundraisers

Our Rheo Thompson Mint Smoothie fundraiser is complete! Thanks to everyone for supporting this fundraiser. Our school community raised approximately $2155. Thanks to Julie Moore for heading this fundraiser.

Thanks to everyone for supporting these fundraisers and in turn the projects they support for NEH PS students.

Holiday Concert

Our performance dates are as follows:

  • Monday December 17th, 12 noon – Dress Rehearsal for student audience
  • Tuesday December 18th, 12 noon and 7 p.m. – Public Performances
  • Thursday December 20th, Snow date 12 noon and 7 p.m.

Warm Winter Clothing

Please ensure that your child(ren) are dressed for outdoor recess. A warm coat, snow pants, boots, mitts and a hat make recess more fun as the students are warm. It is also not very comfortable to have wet pants or socks in class. We do have extras in the office in case a mitt has gone missing or a hat was left on the bus, but we don’t have enough for everyone. We also have some extra socks if needed. If your family is in need of coat, snow pants or boots for the winter weather please contact Mrs. Knechtel. Any extra mitts and hats that you are not using and could be donated to the school would also be appreciated. Thanks.

School Advisory Council

Please feel free to join the School Council at their next meeting on Tuesday, February 5th at 6:30 p.m. in the school library. The snow date is Tuesday, February 12th. Please watch twitter if the weather is questionable for an announcement about the meeting. If buses do not run that day the meeting will be cancelled. Everyone is welcome. Please contact the office if you require babysitting for young children in order to attend the meeting.

School Council – Cookies, Cocoa and Carols PJ Party

The School Council will be hosting a special event for all students on Friday, December 14th during the last block of the day in the gym. Students are invited to wear PJs! Please feel free to contact Julie ( if you are able to help with this event.

Kindergarten Marketplace

Once again this year plans are underway for the Kindergarten Marketplace. Please see the attached information for this fun event that benefits others in our community. As well we are recycling items (good for our earth) and donating the money raised to local charities (Wilmot Family Resource Centre and Stratford House of Blessing). Thanks in advance for all your donations!

AMDSB Foundation For Education

Thanks to the Foundation for granting funds to our school towards the purchase of a Green Screen, stand and apps to use it. We look forward to the creations that our students will make using this new technology.

Please Send Extra Clothes!

If you have a Kindergarten to Grade 3 child, please send a change of clothing in a sealed plastic bag with their name on it to keep at school (in case of accidents e.g. mud, spilled drinks or minor bathroom accidents). This will avoid having to contact you to bring clean clothes.

Shakespeare Fire Department Toy Drive

Once again, North Easthope PS will be supporting the Shakespeare Fire Department’s Toy Drive. This will begin at the end of November and run until December 21st. Families are invited to donate new, unwrapped gifts for children of all ages which will be donated to families in need this holiday season. Thanks for your support of others.

Hot Lunch and Milk Programs

Hot Lunch and Milk orders and payments for January 2019 are due by Wednesday, December 12th. Thanks to our Hot Food Committee and Mrs. Brace for organizing our school Hot Lunch and Milk orders. Due dates must be adhered to for this program.

Sending Special Treats to School

During the school year there may be occasions that you would like to send in a treat for your son or daughter’s class. We ask that you have contacted the classroom teacher directly before sending in any treats. Nut free, packaged foods are the best choice due to food allergies and food safety. At this time teachers are requesting that you not send in any treats for the class for Christmas. We are enjoying a Cookies and Cocoa fun time together and appreciate your support of this event. As well, our students enjoy Tasty Tuesday or Fresh Friday every week. If teachers are planning a special occasion in the classroom they will make a request to parents for a treat if necessary.

Scent Free and Nut Safe School

Parents and students, when coming into the school please consider those with allergies and refrain from using perfumes/colognes and avoid sending nuts or nut products to school. Some students have a life-threatening allergy to peanuts and other nuts. An allergic reaction could cause the child’s airway to clamp down and fill with mucous. Ultimately, without immediate medical treatment, death could occur. As this is a serious problem, please be sure to do the following when preparing lunches and snacks for school:

  • Do not use peanut butter, Nutella or other products containing nuts.
  • Check all ingredients and labels on packages to ensure no nuts are in the products.
  • Wash the face and hands of your child if peanut butter or other nuts were used at home.
  • On occasions when you may want to send in treats for the classroom, please ensure all items are nut free and check with the classroom teacher for other possible allergens.

3:15 Pick Up Instead of Riding Bus

On the rare occasion that you need to pick up your child(ren) at 3:15 instead of them riding the bus home, send a note or write it in their planner so that the teacher and office know ahead of time. You are also required to sign your child out on the clipboard in the lobby. In an emergency situation, where you need to pick up your child unexpectedly, the school needs a phone call before 2:00. After that time, there is a risk that a phone message may not be picked up by dismissal time.

Before and After School Survey Reminder

Families interested in Before or After School Childcare programs, should complete the on-line survey no later than Friday December 14th. The survey is available on the AMDSB website.  Should you require a paper copy, please contact the school.

We appreciate your assistance, as we determine the feasibility of offering such programs.

School Safety Drills

We have completed all of our Fall School Safety Drills. (Fire, Severe Weather, Lockdown and Bus Evacuation) We will repeat them again in the Spring.

Message to Parents from the Foundation for Education

We know that some of you like to give gifts of appreciation at this time of year.

Perhaps you’re wondering what gift to give to that special teacher, custodian, bus driver, principal or secretary?

The Foundation for Education has a unique answer for you!  A Gift to Honour

With a ‘Gift to Honour’ you can choose to make a donation in someone’s honour and 100% of that donation will be designated for a project within your own school.
Here is the process:

  2. Attach a cheque for your chosen amount. The cheque must be made payable to the Foundation for Education who will issue a charitable tax receipt for the full amount.
