June 2019 Newsletter

Dear North Easthope Families:

The month of June has arrived and all of the fun and excitement along with it! NEH PS is proud to plan and host many fun events in the month of June. Thanks to all of the staff, parents and community members who put so much time and effort into planning these events. For a full list of events, please see the calendar below or visit our school website calendar.

All families are invited to attend our end of year school BBQ which will be hosted on Thursday, June 6th from 5:00-7:00. Thanks to our Parent Engagement Fund, as well as your fundraising efforts this year, we are thrilled to offer this BBQ FREE for all family members. We are looking forward to good food, great company and the Starlite Steelband musical presentation that will amaze you. It will be a great family outing! Bring your lawn chairs and picnic blankets. We look forward to seeing you there. A big thank you to Julie M. and all of the volunteers who are making this event possible for everyone!

We are looking forward to welcoming and thanking our volunteers on Friday, June 14th at our Volunteer Tea. Volunteers are an important part of our school and community and we appreciate all that you do to make the world a better place.

We are looking forward to another fun trip to the Lions Pool in Stratford for all students at the end of the month as well as other class outings.

School Council

The final meeting of the School Council will take place on Wednesday, June 12th at 6:30 p.m. in the library. Thank you to all of our School Council members as well as interested parents who regularly attend our meetings, but more importantly help to support our students and staff throughout the school year. A huge thank you for all that you do.

Healthy Schools Committee – Gold status

Our Healthy Schools Committee has been very busy this year promoting positive mental health and physical activity at NEH PS. They have helped to plan and lead several of our school wide events this year including Jump Rope for Heart. They have planted vegetables in one of our gardens. We recently learned that for the second year in a row we have been awarded Gold level certification through the OPHEA Healthy Schools program. There are 274 registered Healthy Schools, representing 48 school boards across the province for OPHEA’s Healthy Schools Certification 2018-19 school year!

Congratulations to Mlle. Miller and this amazing group of students.

End of Year BBQ

This is just a reminder to all NEH families that our End of Year BBQ will be hosted on Thursday, June 6th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. If you have not already returned your family order form, we would ask that you please do that as soon as possible so our organizers can ensure we have enough food for all. There will also be the Starlite Steelband musical show for all to enjoy and take part in!

Jump Rope for Heart

Our Healthy Schools Committee Leaders and Mlle. Miller have planned a fantastic event for our students to enjoy on Friday, June 14th during the last block of the school day. With your support we will Jump to support the efforts of the Heart and Stroke Foundation in promoting a heart healthy community. Students are invited to wear red. Ask your students about what the incentives are for our school goals.

Ontario Student Nutrition Program/ Fresh Friday

Thanks so much to our incredible Fresh Friday volunteers! Thanks to Julie M. for organizing and leading this program for our students. We had a dedicated group of 30 parents and 3 grandparents help prep or serve 23 775 fresh & healthy snacks from September to May this school year for a total of 377 volunteer hours! This program is such a success because of your helping hands and we would not be able to offer the variety of fresh foods and classroom snacks without our many amazing parents & grandparents! Our students enjoyed a diverse menu this year including: corn on the cob, grilled cheese sandwiches, a salad bar, hard boiled eggs, lots of fresh fruits & veggies and our Fresh Friday Lunches to name just a few! Special thanks to Gary West for donating eggs each month, Mike Lichti for cheese from Saputo, the local Milk Committee and Gay Lea for milk and the Stever family for donating corn.

We look forward to next year’s program and hope you’ll consider volunteering to help! Julie M. will be in touch with our current volunteers in August to inquire about your availability, or you can contact her at moorejulie4@gmail.com if you are interested in helping with the Fresh Friday program next year.

Spirit Days

On Monday, June 24th we will have a Hat Day to celebrate school spirit. Our Gr 7/8 class will be selling jumbo freezies for the cost of $2 to support the Tanzania Seed Project that all students have been learning about this school year. As well, on Thursday, June 27th we will be celebrating Canada Day a bit early. Students are invited to wear red and white from head to toe to celebrate our great country.

Scent Free and Nut Safe School

Parents and students, when coming into the school please consider those with allergies and refrain from using perfumes/colognes and avoid sending nuts or nut products to school. Some students have a life-threatening allergy to peanuts and other nuts. An allergic reaction could cause the child’s airway to clamp down and fill with mucous. Ultimately, without immediate medical treatment, death could occur.
