May 2019 Newsletter

Dear North Easthope Families,

It is hard to believe that we are already entering the month of May in this school year! Time sure flies by when we are having fun! With fun, comes a calendar full of activities and exciting times for all.

Congratulations to a number of students and teams who participated in many events last month. We would like to congratulate our junior and intermediate chess players who represented NEH PS at the annual chess tournament. Our players used great strategy and tremendous sportsmanship in all of their games. Congratulations to Logan G for a Third place individual finish overall. Thanks to Coach Hutchinson for taking this team. We want to extend congratulations to all of our students who have participated in the Kiwanis Music Festival in April. Our Ukulele Pack and Gr 2/3 class took part, and both groups performed well and came home with a first place finish! Thank you to Mrs. Hinz for all of her efforts in preparing our students and sharing her passion for music with our students. Thanks to everyone who was able to attend the performances to support our students as part of the audience.

Student Council, The Healthy Schools Team and The Kindness Krew have been busy organizing Spirit Day events for the school. We finished our Earth Day celebrations by planting a new forsythia bush in our front garden and look forward to seeing it bloom each Spring. Thanks to Gaia’s Gardens for also supporting this event. Thanks to our Fresh Friday Volunteers our students had a salad bar as part of our Earth Day Celebrations.

Our Gr 5 class participated in a Celtic Animal art workshop with artist Linda Wiebe. This workshop was sponsored by the Foundation for Enriching Education.
After all of these celebrations from last month, we have much to look forward to this month. A number of classes will be travelling to a variety of places to extend their learning outside of the classroom as well as special guests visiting classrooms. We will also have our Gr 3 and Gr 6 students writing EQAO. These dates are listed below and we would ask that families of these students do their best to avoid late arrivals and absences during this time as each component of EQAO is written within designated timelines.
May 6 – 10 is Education Week and Child and Youth Mental Health Week. We will have a number of activities that week that will highlight the amazing things that are happening in our school, as well as the amazing people who contribute to the education that is provided here each day. Please see the calendar for further information.

Also, we are looking ahead to our Year End BBQ which will be held on Thursday, June 6th from 5:00 – 7:00. All families are invited to join us for food, fun and celebration of a great community! Through a combination of Parent Involvement Funds, as well as school fundraising money, each person will be provided with a hotdog or hamburger and drink and a dessert, free of charge. Be sure to mark your calendar at home for this fun event!

Education Week and Children and Youth Mental Health Week – May 6-10th

On Monday students will be invited to watch the Canada Ballet Jorgen perform and help us learn more about expressing our stories and talents through dance. On Thursday everyone is invited to wear Green to represent our commitment to building strong and positive mental health for all! On Friday May 10th we will have a school walk to start our day and Fresh Friday lunch. On Friday, May 3rd we will have a visit from the Humane Society. We will promote caring for animals and the role that they play in our Mental Health and Wellbeing. Throughout the week we will have some extra physical activity time outside as a school to promote the role that fresh air and exercise play in our health and learning. We are looking forward to the annual Dance Showcase which will take place Wednesday, May 8th at 7pm at Stratford Northwestern.

EQAO Assessment

All Gr 3 and 6 students in Ontario will take part in EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office) assessments during the time frame of May 21st to June 3rd. We ask that families of grade 3 and 6 students do their best to avoid late arrivals and absences during this time as each component of EQAO is written within designated timelines. Snacks will be provided during the assessment. Please call the school if you have questions about this assessment or the schedule.

Emergency Drills

Throughout the school year all schools in the AMDSB carry out Emergency Drills with the students and staff to prepare for emergency situations. In the Fall and Spring we hold a Code Red Drill, Fire Drills, a Severe Weather Drill, Bus Evacuation and a Bomb Threat Drill. We invite our community partners to take part whenever possible (ie. Perth East Fire Department, OPP Community Officer). If you are in the school volunteering during one of the drills you will be expected to take part as well. We have scheduled a Code Red/Lock Down Drill on May 8th. All students and staff will be aware of this drill. Please call the school if you have questions about any of our drills.

Spring Fundraiser

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Spring fundraiser! Your efforts have raised $1,122 toward our fundraising efforts! As always, thank you for your support and participation! A big thanks goes out to Jessie W for organizing all of the orders and delivery of this fundraiser. A reminder to pick up your order on May 10th between 3-4 p.m. We don’t have fridge or freezer space to store any orders.

Shakespeare Optimist Club Donation

Thank you to the Shakespeare Optimist Club for a generous donation towards purchasing technology for student use. On April 30th members presented a cheque to the school for $2,000! We will be replacing some of our out of date iPads in the near future and this donation will help with this purchase. Thanks for helping and supporting the youth in our community.

School BBQ

We are looking ahead to our Year End School BBQ on Thursday, June 6th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. All families are invited to join us for food and fun and a celebration of our great school community! Through a combination of Parent Involvement Funds, as well as school fundraising money, each person will be provided with a hotdog or hamburger and drink and a dessert, free of charge. If the weather is co-operative we will be eating outdoors, so please come prepared with lawn chairs or picnic blankets. We would ask that each family fill out the food order form and return it to the school by Friday, May 31st so that our organizers can ensure enough food is ordered for the evening. Please fill out the form even if you are not attending so that we ensure no family is missed.

Scent Free and Nut Safe School

Parents and students, when coming into the school please consider those with allergies and refrain from using perfumes/colognes and avoid sending nuts or nut products to school. Some students have a life-threatening allergy to peanuts and other nuts. An allergic reaction could cause the child’s airway to clamp down and fill with mucous. Ultimately, without immediate medical treatment, death could occur. As this is a serious problem, please be sure to do the following when preparing lunches and snacks for school:

• Do not use peanut butter, Nutella or other products containing nuts
• Check all ingredients and labels on packages to ensure no nuts are in the products
• Wash the face and hands of your child if peanut butter or other nuts were used at home
• On occasions when you may want to send in treats for the classroom, please ensure all items are nut free and check with the classroom for other possible allergens.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation with this potentially life-threatening allergy.

3:15 Pick Up Instead of Riding Bus

On the rare occasion that you need to pick up your child(ren) at 3:15 instead of them riding the bus home, send a note or write it in their planner so that the teacher and office know ahead of time. You are also required to sign your child out on the clipboard in the lobby. In an emergency situation, where you need to pick up your child unexpectedly, the school needs a phone call before 2:00. After that time, there is a risk that a phone message may not be picked up by dismissal time.

2018-2019 Yearbook

North Easthope Public School will again be compiling a school yearbook! It will be full of memories of our 2018-2019 school year! Mrs. Smitjes along with our photography company, Adanac Images, are working on it. It will be printed in full colour, on fine quality 8 ½” x 11” paper.

In order to have the grade eight graduation pictures included in this book, the pages will be submitted for printing in early July and books will arrive at the school early in September. For those who may not be here in September, we will send it home with a sibling or call your home for pick up.

Through Adanac Images, the cost per book is only $12.00, including tax! If you would like to place a business card in the yearbook, as an advertisement, please attach it with an additional $10.00 to the following order form.

Order forms are due by May 31st, 2019. Thank you!
