January 2019 Newsletter

Dear North Easthope Families:

Happy New Year! I hope 2019 brings continued good health and happiness to you and your family.

Congratulations to all of the students who helped to make the Kindergarten Marketplace such a success. Thanks to Ms. vanZuilen and Ms. Matthews for organizing this special event. Through your generous donations and support of the store $826.30 was raised and was donated to The House of Blessing and the Wilmot Family Resource Centre.

The Student Council also collected and donated toiletry items and non-perishable food items to The House of Blessing as part of the December Spirit Day. Well done Eagles.

Our Holiday Concert and PJ Party were certainly highlights in the month of December for our school. Thanks to each and every one of you for making these events a reality for our students. Thanks to parent Julie Moore for organizing the PJ party and to everyone who helped that day. Thanks as well to Mrs. Kristin Hinz for her leadership with the vocal and instrumental acts that the students performed for several very appreciative audiences. It is a joy to watch our students perform!

As always, if you have any questions, concerns or celebrations, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Jo Anne Knechtel
Principal

Please Send Extra Clothes!

If you have a Kindergarten to Grade 3 child, please send a change of clothing in a plastic bag with their name on it to keep at school (in case of accidents e.g. mud, spilled drinks or minor bathroom accidents). This will avoid having to contact you to bring clean clothes.

Dressing for Outdoor Recess

Please ensure that your child(ren) come to school prepared to go outside for two-20 minute recess breaks each day and sometimes outside gym class. Snow pants are necessary to play in the snow and hats, mitts and boots as well as a warm coat ensure that everyone is warm while enjoying winter activities out of doors. Sending an extra pair of mitts and socks in your child’s backpack will help ensure that they stay dry. In the event that a child is missing an outdoor item we do have some extras in the office.

Student Council/Kindness Crew Spirit Day

We will be hosting another Spirit Day on Friday, January 25th. Students are invited to wear their favourite hat. Donations of hair products, brushes, combs etc. will be collected and donated to the Emily Murphy Centre in Stratford. We will also have a Fresh Friday Lunch that day for students to enjoy.

School Council Meeting

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, February 5th in the school library at 6:30 p.m. Snow date is February 11th.  All parents are welcome to attend. If you require babysitting for younger students please contact the school office.

3:15 Pick Up Instead of Riding Bus

On the rare occasion that you need to pick up your child(ren) at 3:15 instead of them riding the bus home, send a note or write it in their planner so that the teacher and office know ahead of time. You are also required to sign your child out on the clipboard in the lobby. In an emergency situation, where you need to pick up your child unexpectedly, the school needs a phone call before 2:00. After that time, there is a risk that a phone message may not be picked up by dismissal time.

School Council Elmira Poultry Fundraiser

Information will be going home to families for this winter’s fundraiser on January 28th. Orders can be placed online at www.schoolcashonline.com and paper copies are available as well. All orders are due no later than Thursday, February 14th. Pick up for all orders is scheduled for Thursday, March 7th from 3 – 4 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact the school office at 519-625-8398 or Michelle Prince at 519-656-1045. Thanks for everyone’s continued support.

Hot Lunch and Milk Programs

February Hot Lunch and Milk orders and payments are due by Friday, January 18th. Thanks to our Hot Food Committee and Mrs. Brace for organizing our school Hot Lunch and Milk orders.

Sending Special Treats to School

During the school year there may be occasions that you would like to send in a treat for your son or daughter’s class. We ask that you have contacted the classroom teacher directly before sending in any treats. Nut free, packaged foods are the best choice due to food allergies and food safety. If teachers are planning a special occasion in the classroom they will make a request to parents for a treat if necessary.

NEH Bus Delays or School Closure Procedure

Due to the nature of the weather conditions that we may experience, there will be times that our school buses may be cancelled or delayed.

  1. In the case of fog, the bus company and Transportation department, may issue a 2 hour delay for our buses. In cases where North Easthope experiences a 2 hour bus delay, the school will be open for students when they can arrive safely.
  2. If the bus delay becomes a cancellation after the start of the regular school day, then the school will remain open for those students who have arrived, however parents/guardians will be responsible for student transportation at the end of the school day (3:15 p.m.) as buses will not be running.
  3. In the case of bus cancellations due to inclement weather, if possible, the school will be open to all staff and students. The school day runs from 8:55 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. The decision remains with parents for student attendance on days that the buses are not running.

The most up to date and accurate information about bus delays or cancellations is found on the Cancellations and Delays Website. Please book mark this page in your browser and be sure to refresh each time you use it.

All bus delays, school closure or early closure will be announced in the following manner:
**Please note: North Easthope cancellations will be listed under “Stratford Rural Area”

  • CKNX 920 AM or CKNX 101.7 FM, WINGHAM
  • 107.7 FM STRATFORD
  • North Easthope Twitter @NortheasthopePS
  • The Twitter message will go directly to our school webpage.

Scent Free and Nut Safe School

Parents and students, when coming into the school please consider those with allergies and refrain from using perfumes/colognes and avoid sending nuts or nut products to school. Some students have a life-threatening allergy to peanuts and other nuts. An allergic reaction could cause the child’s airway to clamp down and fill with mucous. Ultimately, without immediate medical treatment, death could occur. As this is a serious problem, please be sure to do the following when preparing lunches and snacks for school:

  • Do not use peanut butter, Nutella or other products containing nuts.
  • Check all ingredients and labels on packages to ensure no nuts are in the products.
  • Wash the face and hands of your child if peanut butter or other nuts were used at home.
  • On occasions when you may want to send in treats for the classroom, please ensure all items are nut free and check with the classroom teacher for other possible allergens.
