April 2018 Newsletter

Principal’s Message

We are entering the months that principals call Aprilmayjune because it’s such a busy time with so many activities and so much to do in the last third of the year. It’s a time of working hard, enjoying our learning time and planning for the coming school year, as well as special events we have planned now.

On April 10 the junior classes will be performing a musical. Students and teachers have been busy preparing for the show “Get in the Game”. It’s all about sports, so please come and see your child in action.

We have had to cancel the Fun Night that was planned this month as we didn’t have enough volunteer support to run it successfully. The Fun Night was the school council’s major fundraiser to support bussing for excursions and class trips. To continue with this mandate we will be running the Goodie Basket Draw, but we need your support with the quick timeline. Further on in this newsletter is information about the themes for each class’s basket and timelines. We are hoping that our Warrior families will be able to get items to the school by April 9 so we can wrap baskets and have them ready for display at the Junior Musical on the 10th. Tickets will also be on sale at the school from the 10th to 20th. The draws will be made on April 20th. Please help support this important fundraiser. If everyone brings in a little, we’ll fill our baskets, and it’s sure to be a success.

Happy Spring

Lost and Found

Our lost and found bin is overflowing with winter gear. Come in and check out the bin under the central stairs so that your items can find their way home.

School Council

Our next meeting will be Tuesday April 3, at 6:30 in the multipurpose room.  Childcare is provided.

Drop off

Thank you to parents and families who are using the Drop Off area or “Kiss and Ride”. For safety, please avoid making a U-turn on Binning Street at pick up or drop off time to ease traffic flow and ensure safety. Instead, continue down Binning, or use the turn around on the school access road.

Parents of students in Grades 3 and 6 please note that EQAO testing for these grades will be between May 22 and June 4. Please make every effort not to schedule appointments etc during this time.

On the Buses

This is a reminder of the safe and respectful conduct that is expected when students ride the school bus. In order for everyone to be safe on the bus, the driver must be able to attend to the road. Students are expected to:

• Remain seated at all times according to the seating plan
• Sit facing forward without blocking the centre aisle
• Keep hands and feet to yourself
• Refrain from eating or using technology while on the bus

Failure to comply with these expectations endangers the safety of all riders. As outlined on the AMDSB policy, progressive discipline procedures will be applied. For details, go to the AMDSB transportation site.

Most information will be posted on the school website; facebook page at North Perth Westfield Elementary School and through our Twitter account @NPWestfield. Newsletters will be sent in electronic format (by email) but we are happy to provide a paper copy if you wish. Many teachers use blogs, email, and websites to enhance home-school communication as well. Check with your child’s teacher.

Attendance/Safe Arrival Program

We operate a ministry mandated “Safe Arrival” program to assist the school in checking daily attendance. If your son or daughter will be absent on a given day, please phone the school before 9:00 a.m. (519-291-6147). Our answering machine receives information outside of regular school hours. Please leave a brief message including your name, your child’s name, teacher, and reason for the absence.

School Cash Online

For those who have not registered, you can do so anytime at the School Cash Online website.

If you have any questions about schoolcash online, please ask Kara by calling the school or by email.

Allergy Alert

Please remember our school is a nut free zone at all times.

ECO Team Notes

The junior and intermediate Eco Teams are working hard to bring attention to environmental issues at Westfield! In March, the junior Eco Team promoted Earth Hour and they are looking forward to planning a waste-free lunch on April 20. The intermediate Eco Team has successfully applied for two grants to increase biodiversity on our yard. They will use the grant they received from the World Wildlife Foundation to plant different types of trees to create an outdoor learning space. Their Speak Up Ontario grant will be used to install a raised garden bed. Both junior and intermediate Eco Teams are working towards certificating Westfield with Ontario Eco Schools.

Music Notes

The actors dancers and singers are warming up and practicing every day. The costumes are being gathered and the stage is being set….yes…it’s Junior Musical Time! See and hear the Junior division as they sing and dance their way through “Get in the Game” a musical all about different sports. The performance will be on Tuesday, April 10 at 7 p.m.

On May 1, our Westfield Band will be travelling to Stratford to perform once again at a mass band event involving 18 different bands from all over the board. Permission forms will be out shortly.

Goodie Baskets

The Goodie Basket draw will support busing costs for field trips. Each class has been assigned a theme. We are asking each student in the class to donate one or two items towards their class’s theme. Items need not be expensive, but must be new. Please send the item(s) to school before April 9th. The baskets will be wrapped at school that evening.

Tickets will be available from the office starting April 10, and at the Junior Musical. They will be $2 per ticket or 3 for $5. The raffle will be drawn on April 20.
